The ATP Rankings grade men’s singles and doubles players while the WTA rankings are geared to women’s singles and doubles players. Both ranking systems follow a similar format - both rankings are based on the points earned by the players in events over a 52 week time frame.
However, to avoid the players who compete in more tournaments gaining an advantage, there is a cap on the number of tournaments which are counted towards a ranking.
For ATP players - their best results from 19 events will be counted for their rankings, while for WTA players, the best results from 16 tournaments are counted.
