Tennis Coach Tutoring

The CTS course will not be running for the 2017/18 academic year.  The decision has been made to run the CTS course every other year, and it is likely that the next course will take place in January 2019, however this is yet to be confirmed.  More information will be released about the next course at the end of 2018.

Course Information and Application Process

LTA tutors inspire and train the next generation of tennis coaches. The Certificate in Tutoring Skills (CTS) course is for experienced, successful, driven coaches who have a passion for coaching, are keen to help other coaches achieve their goals and want to train to become an LTA tutor. On successful completion of the CTS course, candidates will be able to:

  • Deliver and assess on the LTA/1st4sport Level 1 and 2 courses
  • Apply to tutor the LTA/1st4sport Level 3 courses and LTA Level 4 courses when tutoring positions at these levels open next year

Please note the provision of Level 1 and 2 courses is outsourced to 1st4sport Approved Centres. Successful completion of the course is, therefore, not a guarantee of work.

Course dates and venue

Dates for the Certificate in Tutoring Skills course 2019 are yet to be confirmed.

The cost of the course is £750.

Course structure

Module 1:

Days 1, 2 & 3

  • Structuring a learning session
  • Methods of presenting information, organisation, development and feedback
  • 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Education and Training
  • 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement

Module 2:

Days 4 & 5

  • Performance and developing coaching skills
  • Giving effective feedback and action planning
  • Tutoring skills – Formative Assessment
  • 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Education and Training – Formative and Summative assessments
  • 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement – Formative assessment

Module 3:

Days 6 & 7

 Tutoring skills – Formative and Summative assessments

  • 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement – Summative assessment

Candidates must attend all the sessions of the course and pass all elements of the assessment criteria to be successful. This must be achieved within a 3 year window from the start date of the course.

Course pre-requisites:

  • Hold a valid LTA Coach Accreditation+ (which has not been suspended or withdrawn)
  • Hold a minimum qualification of an LTA Level 4

Person specification:

  • Have proven coaching experience and track record in coaching players and running coaching programmes
  • Have excellent coaching knowledge of the four performance factors in tennis and the coaching process
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of British Tennis and international tennis
  • Act as an ambassador for the new strategy of British Tennis both internally and externally communicating and promoting the vision and direction of the LTA with passion, excellence, teamwork and integrity
  • Be an inspiring presenter with ability to present both on court and off court and use relevant I.T. tools
  • Communicate professionally with LTA colleagues and external stakeholders from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Be able to manage difficult conversations
  • Have the ability to develop people by giving feedback and/or being a mentor
  • Be well organised with an attention to detail
  • Work successfully in a team environment and contribute to team cohesiveness
  • Commit to annual LTA Tutor Training
