Level 4 - Senior Performance Tennis Coach Qualification

Course Purpose

The Senior Performance Coach (SPC) qualification is for coaches who wish to gain the required competencies and knowledge to develop international level 14 & under junior players. The SPC will train and develop a coaching workforce capable of delivering the LTA Performance Strategy.

SPC Course Objectives

On successful completion of the Senior Performance Coach Qualification, coaches will have the knowledge and competencies to:

  • Fully understand the aspirations of the LTA Performance Strategy and the Player Pathway.
  • To be able to apply the player development philosophy specific to the age stage and gender of the players.
  • To be able to effectively plan the long term development of a player based around their specific strengths.
  • Support the physical development players including prevention  and management of injuries.
  • To be an effective teacher, trainer and match-play coach using different modes of training in singles and doubles.
  • To understand the fundamentals of personal leadership and coaching styles.
  • Gain an age and gender specific knowledge of learning and skill acquisition.
  • Nurture the players holistically through creating transformative training environments putting the person before the player.
  • Have a clear awareness of 14 and under world junior standards.

Course structure

  • Eight modules of three days
  • One module of three days to an international junior event
  • Set of assignments in between modules
  • Continuous assessment

Assignments

Coaches will have to complete and pass a number of assignments throughout the course to prove they meet the competencies of being an LTA SPC coach.

Assessment

This course is a continuous assessment based course. More information on course content and assignments will be given once successfully enrolled onto the course and during module 1. 

Course pre-requisites

Hold either the LTA Level 3 qualification, Performance Coach qualification, Club Coach qualification, DCA or a non LTA qualification awarded with NVQ level 2 coaching teaching and instructing tennis.

  • Be an Accredited+ coach.
  • Have (or have had) a rating of 4.1 or better, or hold a play test grade 3, or playing level supported through written confirmation by a member of the LTA Regional/ National Performance team.
  • Be working with a player between the ages of 10-14 years who is part of the County, Regional, or National Age Group Programme.
  • OR meet the criteria for the Pathway Coach Fast Track Programme (for ex-professional tennis players currently coaching in performance tennis). For more information, please see here  or contact the Head of Performance Coach Education at performancecoachsupport@lta.org.uk

Cost of the course

The full cost of the course is £1,200.

This includes:

  • Attendance at each day of the course
  • Attendance at an international junior event - details will be communicated with candidates once enrolled
  • Marking of assignments, between modules

Places available

  • The SPC accepts a maximum of 16 candidates per course.

Tutors

  • There will be a core of two LTA performance tutors throughout the course plus a range of expert presenters across coaching, sports science and medicine.
