Klugman lifts title in Portugal
Britain’s Hannah Klugman ticked off a new milestone in her professional tennis career – winning her first career title at the W50 Leiria.
The 17-year-old reached the semi-final without dropping a set, before going on to defeat Germany’s Caroline Werner 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-6(5) to reach the final.
Klugman went on to beat former world No.49 Linda Fruhvirtova in the final 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 to claim her maiden World Tennis Tour title.
The young Brit has been in impressive form over the past few months after clinching her first WTA Tour win at the Lexus Nottingham Open back in June.
She’s gone on to make the semi-finals of the Lexus British Pro Series Nottingham and quarter-final of the Lexus British Pro Series Aldershot, following her second career main draw match at Wimbledon.
Klugman – who is supported by the Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus – is a former junior Roland Garros singles runner-up and also made doubles finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
There was also British success in the women's doubles at the W50 Leiria, with Madeline Brooks and Amelia Rajecki clinching the title.
Top seeds Brooks and Rajecki beat Chelsea Fontenel and Stephanie Judith Visscher 6-4, 7-6(1) in the final.
Elsewhere, Jeremy Gschwendtner won the M15 Buzau with Francesco Ferrari, claiming a 6-3, 6-1 win Eduard Gabriel Coreisa and Andrei-Cristian Jinga.
Brits win four wheelchair titles
Gordon Reid earned himself the perfect warm-up for the 2026 US Open Wheelchair Championships after successfully retaining his men’s singles title at the WC500 JTCC Wheelchair Championship in College Park, Maryland.
After a first round bye, world No.5 and second seed Reid eased through the draw with three straight-set wins, benefiting from a walkover ahead of his scheduled semi-final against world No.4 Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina.
Reid went on to beat top seed and world No.3 Martin de la Puente 6-1, 6-4 in the final for his third victory over the Spanish player this season.
British No.3 Andrew Penney reached the biggest final of his career in the doubles after partnering the USA’s Conner Stroud to defeat second seeds Dani Caverzaschi and Maarten Ter Hofte 6-4, 6-3 in the semi-finals. However, Penney and Stroud had to award a walkover in the final, while Andy Lapthorne completed his preparations for the US Open by reaching the semi-finals of the quad singles.
Elsewhere, Dahnon Ward and Ruby Bishop earned three titles between them at the WC100 Sion Open in Switzerland.
Ward has now won 14 of his last 15 matches since mid-July in straight sets after the British No.5 and fourth seed defeated Dutch top seed Robin Groenewoud 6-3, 6-0 in the semi-finals in Sion and then beat second seed Daisuke Arai of Japan 7-5, 6-2 in the final for his fifth singles title of 2026.
Numerically, 2026 is the best season of Ward’s career to date, and he claimed his third doubles title of the season partnering Frederic Cattaneo of France.
After bowing out in the women’s singles semi-finals to Japan’s Rio Okano, Ruby Bishop earned her first women’s doubles title of 2026 partnering Okano after the top seeds survived a deciding match tie-break in their semi-final and then went on to beat Swiss second seeds Nalani Buob and Angela Grosswiler 6-2, 6-2.
