Strong British performances at the US Open
The Brits enjoyed impressive runs once again at this year’s US Open, with three finals and six semi-finals.
Men’s doubles duo Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski reached their second Grand Slam final of the season – narrowly finishing runners-up to Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
The Brits had three championship points in the deciding third set, but the Roland Garros champions came back to secure a nail-biting 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 win. Read the full report here.
Salisbury has now jumped four places in the rankings to world No.11, while Skupski is up to No.9. They are up to fourth in the Doubles Race for the Nitto ATP Finals. There are currently five British players in the top 11 of the ATP doubles rankings with all five currently set to qualify for the Finals.
Wheelchair duo Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid also ended their campaign as runners-up in the men’s doubles against Tokita Oda and Gustavo Fernandez.
Their quest for a sixth US Open title ended in a 6-1, 2-6, 10-6 defeat against the Japanese, Argentinian duo.
Hewett was also beaten in the men’s singles semi-final against Fernandez 6-7(4), 6-1, 7-5.
Andy Lapthorne reached the semi-final of the quad wheelchair singles before exiting to world No.2 Sam Schroder 6-1, 6-0, meanwhile Greg Slade got his first US Open wins but bowed out in the quarter-final of the singles and semi-final in doubles. Lucy Shuker also reached the semis in the women's doubles.
In the junior draws, Hannah Klugman and Mika Stojsavljevic reached the girls’ singles semi-finals and rising wheelchair star Ruben Harris won the junior doubles with Maximilian Taucher.
Billy Harris wins first Challenger title
Britain’s Billy Harris lifted his first ATP Challenger Tour title over the weekend at the Cassis Challenger in France.
Harris won four close matches to reach the final – winning four of five tie-breaks played – before coming from a set down to beat Estonia’s Daniil Glinka in the final 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
It’s a breakthrough victory for the 30-year-old – not only winning his maiden Challenger title but also his first singles trophy since 2022.
The victory came off an impressive showing at the US Open this year, where he came through qualifying to reach the main draw for the first time – losing a close battle with eventual semi-finalist Felix Auger-Aliassime in the opening round.
Basing, Broom and Dudeney lead ITF title winners
Max Basing backed up his title run in Thailand last week with the joint biggest singles title of his career at the M25 Bali.
The 22-year-old – who competed in the NCAA for Stanford University – clinched his second trophy in as many weeks after Turkey’s Yanki Erel was forced to retire at 4-6, 5-2.
The British star is now on a 10-match winning streak, dropping just two sets across his last two tournaments.
Basing also won the men’s doubles title with Japan’s Koki Matsuda – beating Lucky Candra Kurniawan and Tegar Abdi Satrio Wibowo in the final 6-2, 6-2.
Former GB United Cup star Charles Broom won his third title of the season at the M25 Sapporo in Japan.
Broom sealed the title with a 7-6(4), 7-5 victory over Kaichi Uchida – finishing a flawless week without losing a set.
Alicia Dudeney featured amongst the singles title winners for he second time this season – beating Arina Bulatova 6-3, 6-3 in the final of the W15 Monastir.
Finn Bass and Ben Jones took home their second doubles title of the year together at the M25 +H Bagneres-de-Bigorre in France – narrowly winning a tight final against Maxence Beauge and Axel Garcian 4-6, 7-6(6), 12-10.
Finally, 27-year-old Jeremy Gschwendtner won his second career ITF doubles title at the M15 Buzau with Dragos Nicolae Cazacu. The British, Romanian duo beat Mihai Tazvan Marinescu and Daniel Uta 6-4, 6-1.
Bartram wins Sion Open doubles title
Ben Bartram came home from the Sion Open with his second wheelchair doubles title of the season alongside France’s Federic Cattaneo.
Bartram and Cattaneo defeated Malaysian duo Abu Samah Borhan and Mohamad Yusshazwan Yusoff 6-3, 6-4 in the final.
The British star also reached the men’s singles quarter-final, while fellow Briton Andrew Penney made the semis. Cornelia Oosthuizen also reached the semi-final of the women’s doubles and quarter-final in singles.
Oliver Cox's run of three titles from three tournaments came to an end when he lost out in the quad singles semis to eventual champion Diego Perez of Chile.
Cox and France’s Justine Michel finished runners-up in the quad doubles against Perez and Roman Zechmeister 6-3, 7-6(1).
