Jack Draper gives a fist pump in his US Open fourth round win over Tomas Mahac
Grand Slam

Five big questions ahead of the US Open 2025

• 3 MINUTE READ

Are you ready for the final Grand Slam of the season? With just a few days to go until the start of this year's tournament, we break down our five biggest questions coming into this year's US Open.

Can Draper light up New York again?

It’s been almost one year since Jack Draper made his Grand Slam breakthrough in reaching the semi-finals at the US Open. The Briton had a fairytale run to the final four - bypassing Zhang Zhizhen, Facundo Diaz, Botic van de Zandschulp, Tomas Machac and Alex de Minaur in straight sets before falling short to eventual champion Jannik Sinner.

The run in New York proved to be a springboard for Draper, who later went on to claim his first ATP 500 title in Vienna in October and a maiden Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells this year.

The 23-year-old has continued to flourish on the ATP Tour since last time out at the US Open - having clocked a career-high ranking of world No.4, reached the fourth round at the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and made the semis at the HSBC Championships.

The British No.1 holds a 13-3 win record on hard courts so far this year, and having claimed one of the biggest titles of the year so far at Indian Wells, Draper could be tipped for another memorable run in The Big Apple.

The US Open will mark Draper’s first tournament since Wimbledon after he picked up an injury in his left arm.

Will Raducanu continue her red-hot form?

Former champion Emma Raducanu will return to Flushing Meadows in the best form since her historic run to the crown four years ago.

Everyone is aware of Raducanu’s historic journey to become the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title since Virginia Wade in 1977 and the first qualifier to win a major in the Open Era. However, wins in New York have been hard to come by since that unforgettable victory, with Raducanu unable to make it past the first round in her previous two outings.

That said, the 22-year-old has enjoyed a solid season so far in 2025, which included reaching her first WTA 1000 quarter-final in Miami, making the quarter-finals at the first women’s HSBC Championships tournament in over 50 years and stringing a run to the semi-finals at the Mubadala Citi Open just a couple of weeks ago.

In Cincinnati, Raducanu also pushed world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka all the way in one of the matches of the season. The young Brit came within moments of beating the reigning US Open champion before narrowly losing out 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(5).

With the former world No.10 in impressive form and quickly finding her feet on the hard courts, will Raducanu be able to snap her unlucky streak at the US Open and make a statement once again? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Who will win the US Open Mixed Doubles Championships?

One of the most talked about stories heading into this year’s tournament is the revamped mixed doubles event. In the week before the main draws get underway, the new-look event will see some of the world’s best tennis stars team up to contest the title, with some blockbuster pairings already confirmed.

Amongst the star-studded pairs are Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz, Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, Emma Navarro and Sinner and more.

The event will look slightly different from previous years, so find out everything you need to know below:

Can anyone stop Sinner and Alcaraz and who will emerge victorious on the WTA side?

There’s no question that Sinner and Alcaraz have created a league of their own on the ATP tour. The two youngsters have dominated the tour over the last 18 months with few players being able to match the high level and standards they have set. Between them they have won the last seven Grand Slams.

While the top two seeds will no doubt arrive as the hot favourites at this year’s tournament, there are a host of other players eager to chase them down and put an end to their dominant streak.

Amongst those who could pose a threat to Sinner and Alcaraz is Draper, recently crowned Mubdala Citi Open champion Alex de Minaur, the in-form Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik, 2024 US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz and four-time champion Novak Djokovic.

It’s a slightly different story on the WTA side, with all three major titles so far this year going to different players.

Madison Keys took home her first Grand Slam title on the hard courts in Melbourne, while Coco Gauff emerged victorious at Roland Garros, and Iga Swiatek clinched a sixth major on the grass at the All England Club.

All three of the above will be amongst the favourites to win but you can’t write off former champion Aryna Sabalenka, 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, 2024 runner-up Jessica Pegula and Washington champion Leylah Fernandez, who will pose stiff competition.

Which doubles stars will prevail in New York?

British doubles have never been in a stronger position than it is right now.

All Grand Slam tournaments so far this season have featured British interest in the men’s doubles, with Henry Patten winning the Australian Open crown and Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool sweeping up the silverware at Wimbledon, while Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury narrowly missed out on the Roland Garros title.

With just one major title left to claim in 2025, the Brits will be strong contenders heading into this year’s US Open.

Cash and Glasspool come in as the No.1 ranked team on tour this season and will arrive brimming with confidence off the back of a breakthrough year that’s seen them claim five titles, including a first Grand Slam at SW19.

Meanwhile, Salisbury knows exactly what it takes to win in New York. The Briton wrote his name in the history books alongside America’s Rajeev Ram when they became the first doubles partnership in the Open Era to win three consecutive US Open men’s doubles titles between 2021 and 2023.

Reigning Australian Open champions Patten and Harri Heliovaara will be gunning to lift a second title of the year at Flushing Meadows. It’s been another impressive year for the British, Finnish duo who reached the final in Dubai, made eight ATP semi-finals as well as the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and they could be tipped as strong contenders for the crown.
