Day four: Hewett wins three set battle against Fernandez before taking doubles crown with Reid
Alfie Hewett is the Lexus British Open men's singles champion for the third time. The British No.1 defeated defending champion and world No.4 Gustavo Fernandez 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Hewett then secured his second trophy of the day - winning the men's doubles with his long-term doubles partner and British No. 2 Gordon Reid against Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spaargaren.
Men's
Hewett has extended his winning streak over Argentina's Fernandez to seven consecutive matches with today's title win.
The world No.2 fought back from a set down to take the break at 4-4 in the second before wrapping up the set and levelling the score line.
The Brit was 3-1 down in the third before digging deep to recover the break and win the final four games to secure his third Lexus British Open crown.
Hewett and Reid then defeated Spain’s de la Puente and Spaargaren of the Netherlands 6-0, 6-2 to win their third Lexus British Open title in the last match of the day.
Women's
Top seed Yui Kamiji was victorious in the women's final for the second consecutive year, seeing off second seed Aniek Van Koot 6-0, 6-4.
Elsewhere, Japanese Chinese duo Manami Tanaka and Zhenzhen Zhu defeated Xiaohui Li and Ziying Wang to take home the women's doubles crown.
Quad
Top seed Niels Vink beat fellow Dutchman Sam Schroder 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 in the singles before taking the doubles crown with Guy Sasson - the pair won 6-2, 6-3 against Ahmet Kaplan and Sam Schroder.
Junior
Elsewhere, Oliver Bonding has won the boy's final - the young Brit saw off Bulgaria's Alexander Vasilev 6-4, 6-2.
Meanwhile, British pairing Conor Brady and Benjamin Gusic Wan lost out on the boy's doubles final, losing 6-3, 6-4 to Timofei Derepasko and Jacapo Vasami.
The final line-up is set at the Lexus British Open Roehampton and Alfie Hewett is keeping British hopes alive after he made it past Gordon Reid in today's semi-final, while the pair are also set for the men's doubles final.
Men's
Hewett will face third seed and reigning champion Gustavo Fernandez in tomorrow's final.
The British No.1 extended his winning streak over Reid to 16 matches after beating the Scotsman 6-2, 6-0 in their semi-final on Centre Court.
Fernandez came past Spanish No.2 seed Martin De la Puente 6-2, 6-4 to make it to his second consecutive Lexus British Open final.
Hewett and Reid will take on Spain’s Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spaargaren of the Netherlands in the men's doubles final.
The Brits beat Dani Caverzaschi and China’s Zhenxu Ji 6-3, 6-3 in the semi-finals.
Women's
The women's final will be a battle between the top seeds as Japan's Yui Kamiji will take on the Netherlands' Aniek Van Koot.
Kamiji came past fourth seed Ziying Wang 7-5, 6-2 while Van Koot defeated Japan's Manami Tanaka 6-2, 6-3.
Quad
British No.2 Greg Slade came close to defeating second seed Sam Schroder at a set and 5-1 up.
However, the Dutch former champion showed his experience bringing the match back on side and the Brit eventually lost out 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 5-7.
Schroder will face No.1 seed Niels Vink in the quad final after he defeated Guy Sasson 6-0, 6-2.
Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid ensured that there will be a British finalist in Friday’s men’s singles at the Lexus British Open Roehampton after both coming through their quarter-finals on Wednesday’s second day of play, albeit in different circumstances.
Men's
Top seed Hewett is just one win away from reaching back-to-back finals in Roehampton after making a quicker start than in his first round match on Tuesday and defeating Spain’s Dani Caverzaschi 6-3, 6-4 to maintain his unbeaten record against Caverzaschi in senior competition.
There was a personal best performance from Dahnon Ward in his quarter-final against Reid, the British No.5 taking the British No.2 to three sets for the first time, but Reid eventually earned a two-game cushion at 4-2 in the final set and progressed to the last four 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Ben Bartram’s hopes of going beyond the quarter-finals came to an end against defending champion Gustavo Fernandez, the Argentinian earning a 6-1, 6-3 victory to set up a semi-final against second seed Martin de la Puente, who beat China’s Zhenxu Ji 6-2, 6-2.
As well as going head-to-head in singles, Hewett and Reid will also begin their doubles campaign on Thursday. After a bye into the semi-final the top seeds face Caverzaschi and Ji, who ended a spirited quarter-final effort from Bartram and Ward 6-2, 6-3 in the last match on Centre Court.
Andrew Penney and his French partner Guilhem Laget saw their doubles challenged ended by Tom Egberink and Joachim Gerard 6-1, 6-3.
Women's
Lucy Shuker put up a big performance in the women’s singles quarter-finals, but it was not enough to maintain her hopes of a British Open title after the British No.1 pushed China’s world No.4 Ziying Wang to a third and deciding set for the second time this year.
However, Wang survived to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and now meets top seed and defending champion Yui Kamiji.
World No.1 Kamiji won a thriller in one of the most anticipated matches of the day as she took on four-time British Open champion Diede de Groot in a rematch of both last year’s final in Roehampton and the women’s singles gold medal match at the Paris Paralympics.
Three-time British Open champion Kamiji edged both of those contests in 2024 and in her first meeting with De Groot since their Paralympic final, she dominated a final set tie-break to seal an enthralling 6-0, 4-6, 7-6(1) victory.
Kamiji’s Paralympic gold medal-winning doubles partner Manami Tanaka and Dutch second seed Aniek van Koot will contest the other women’s semi-final.
Quad
British No.2 Greg Slade will face second seed Sam Schroder in Thursday’s quad singles semis following his quarter-final win on the opening day of play.
Top seed Niels Vink and Israel’s Guy Sasson will contest the other singles semi-final and they also combined on Wednesday’s second day of play to defeat Slade and Oliver Cox 6-1, 6-1, ending British hopes in the quad doubles.
Britain’s wheelchair tennis players won six of the 10 matches they were involved in on the opening day of the 2025 Lexus British Open Roehampton, with arguably the performances of the day coming from Ben Bartram and Dahnon Ward.
Men's
Bartram closed the first day’s play with his fourth career win over a world top 10-ranked opponent after defeating world No.9 Casey Ratzlaff 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
The British No.3 stormed into an early 5-0 lead before wrapping up the opening set with an ace and secured a two-game cushion at the start of the deciding set before beating Ratzlaff for the second time this year.
British No.5 Ward secured another fine win by ranking after defeating world No.12 Sergei Lysov of Israel 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-5 to book a quarter-final against fellow Brit Gordon Reid, a 6-2, 6-0 winner of Asif Abbasi.
Alfie Hewett made a slow start to his bid to reach the men’s singles final in Roehampton for the second year in a row, but fought back to defeat Tokyo 2020 Paralympic silver medallist Tom Egberink of the Netherlands 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The world No.2 and top seed, who won just six of his first nine career matches against Egberink, extended his winning stretch over the Dutch to 10 matches now after finding Egberink’s slice and big forehands difficult to handle in the early stages.
Hewett’s men’s quarter-final opponent will be Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi, who defeated former British Open champion Joachim Gerard in three sets.
Bartram goes on to face third seed Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina. Defending British Open champion Fernandez reversed the result of last weekend’s Lexus Eastbourne Open final after defeating Ruben Spaargaren 6-1, 6-2.
Women's
British women’s No.1 Lucy Shuker ended a four match losing steak against Japan’s Saki Takamuro, defeating the world No.12 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to book a quarter-final against Chinese fourth seed Wang Ziying.
Wang recovered from being 5-2 down against British No.2 Cornelia Oosthuizen in their opening set to progress 7-5, 6-3.
There was also an impressive opening set from Britain’s Ruby Bishop, as she took an early lead against former world No.9 Macarena Cabrillana. However, the Chilean came back to win 6-7,(9), 6-1, 6-2.
Arguably the biggest upset of the day belonged to Japan’s Manami Tanaka, who beat China’s women’s singles world No.3 Li Xiaohui 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Quad
The only all-British match of the day saw British No.2 Greg Slade beat Oliver Cox 6-2, 6-1.
While British No.1 Andy Lapthorne withdrew with an injury, alternate Gary Cox lost out to world No.3 Guy Sasson, Lapthorne’s intended opponent before his withdrawal.
Sam Schroder and Niels Vink, last year’s quad singles finalists in Roehampton and the world’s top two ranked players, both began their campaigns with straight sets wins.
