Wuhan Open 2026: Katie Boulter draws 11th seed & Sonay Kartal set for potential clash with Wimbledon champion

• 1 minute read

The draws have been announced for the 2026 Wuhan Open WTA 1000 event in China, with both Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal set to star in this year’s main draw.

Boulter has been given a tough opening round draw up against 11th seed Diana Shnaider, while Kartal will face Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina in the first round.

This will be a third meeting in three years between Boulter and Shnaider. Their last match ended in a close three-set battle at the 2025 HSBC Championships.

The Brit has won her first round match in her last three tournaments, including Cincinnati, the US Open and Beijing, and is aiming for her third top-20 win of the season.

Shnaider reached the semi-finals at Roland Garros earlier this year, but the former world No.11 is still waiting for her first title of 2026.

Kartal is set to face world No.50 Kalinina in only her third tournament since returning from long-term injury.

The 24-year-old Brit reached the third round of the WTA 1000 China Open last week and is coming off the back of a promising performance against Czechia’s Marie Bouzkova at the Billie Jean King Cup.

The winner of this match will go on to face fourth seed and reigning Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova.

In the doubles, Olivia Nicholls and partner Tereza Mihalikova will open against Hao-Ching Chan and Miyu Kato.

Maia Lumsden will team up with Alexandra Panova to face Hanyu Guo and Kristina Mladenovic.

The Wuhan Open main draw gets underway from 12-18 October and will be available to watch live on Sky Sports and NOW TV.
