Cam Norrie on Norway clash, Davis Cup title ambitions & ‘loving’ his tennis

• 4 minute read

British No.2 Cam Norrie is in high spirits heading into Great Britain’s Davis Cup clash with Norway this week.

The world No.26 is loving his time on court at the moment and it’s been reflected in his results, coming off the back of another positive week at a Grand Slam, picking up solid results at the Australian Open.

After a bit of time to reflect and re-charge, the British star is now ready to turn his attention to a pivotal Davis Cup tie against a strong Norwegian team.

He forms part of a strong GB side that includes Jack Draper, Jacob Fearnley and last year's No.1 doubles duo, Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool.

Norrie joined up with his Davis Cup teammates over the weekend in Oslo, where the squad have quickly settled into their regular routines – despite the cold weather conditions.

“We typically go for a walk in the morning to find some coffee but it’s freezing out there right now,” Norrie joked. “In the evening we’re having a go on the darts, playing around the world, and then maybe a little bit of chess, that became part of the routine in Poland as well.

“It’s really nice to be here in Norway with a full strength squad. It’s always nice to split up the calendar year and come together as a team, so many great people here, support staff too.

“I think we’re all excited and we’re all really comfortable with one another, which is one of the most important things as a team.”

The 30-year-old heads to Norway as the most experienced member of what is now a relatively new-look Great Britian Davis Cup squad.

The former top-10 star has been a key part of Captain Leon Smith’s side over recent years and has always loved the opportunity to represent the Brits.

Norrie is just one win away from sealing his 10th match victory for his country, adding to the two he picked up against Poland in last year’s Play-Offs.

Coming into the 2026 campaign, Norrie is confident in the strength of this year’s side and believes they have the potential and ambition to go far in the competition.

“I couldn’t be more honoured to be representing Great Britain this week against a really good team here in Norway,” he said.

“This is what it’s all about, playing these home and away ties. Playing away in Norway, I’ve never been here before so I’m excited to get going.

“It’s a fresh team and I think we want to try and win the Davis Cup this year. It’s a long way to go but we have the depth in the squad and everyone is so comfortable with one another.

“We’ve got Jack (Draper) in the team this week so it’s been nice to share some practices and time with him as well. I think we’re all excited and we’re all really comfortable with one another, which is one of the most important things as a team.”

Norrie has plenty of reason to feel positive heading into the Norway tie, with the Briton high on confidence from the last six months on tour.

After a quarter-final run at Wimbledon, Norrie also reached the Moselle Open final and says he finished the season ‘really enjoying his tennis’.

The former Indian Wells champion picked up where he left off at the start of 2026 as well. At the Australian Open he came through two fierce battles with Benjamin Bonzi and Emilio Nava, before losing a close four-set match with eventual semi-finalist at world No.4 Alexander Zverev.

Norrie has been playing some of his best tennis on the biggest stages and seems to be loving every moment of it.

“It was a nice finish to the year for me and I was enjoying my tennis so much towards the end,” he commented. “I had some really good results and I was playing so free, not thinking too much, all on instinct and it gave me a lot of confidence to know I left it all out on court. I had a well-deserved rest after that.

“There were some tough matches there (the Australian Open), tricky matches that I had to get through – but it was so fun playing in Melbourne this time of year.

“I think my match with (Alexander) Zverev was so good. He was playing really high level tennis and I was able to match him for two hours so I take a lot of confidence from that match.

“Those are the matches you want to be playing – Friday night in Melbourne against one of the best players in the world, Zverev was playing so, so well.”

While confidence is high, Norrie knows that the challenge ahead in Norway will be tough for the Lexus GB team.

This Norwegian squad boasts a former Grand Slam finalist and world No.12 Casper Ruud as well as a previous junior world No.1 and boys’ singles Wimbledon champion in Nicolai Budkov Kjaer.

The Brits will need to win this best of five match Qualifier tie to reach the second round, before hopefully going on to make the Final 8 at the end of the year.

“We’re all excited for this one. Casper (Ruud) is one of the best players in the world and especially for him to be playing at home, he’s going to be excited to play.

“Nico (Kjaer), I’ve practiced with him a lot in Monte Carlo, he’s a very good player and loves to play Davis Cup as well.

“This tie is so special to play a full strength squad from our end and their end. I know they love their tennis here in Norway so I’m excited to see the atmosphere they bring. This is what you want as a tennis fan and player.”

Great Britain face Norway in the Davis Cup Qualifiers on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 February. Watch the action live exclusively on Tennis Channel, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport.
