Team Tennis Schools

Team Tennis Schools is a programme of three nationally organised competitions, which provides Secondary School and Further Education pupils with the opportunity to play regular competitive tennis and to represent their school. All competitions begin locally and culminate in a national final. 

Team Tennis Schools

Secondary schools tennis competitions are growing with 13,500 players from over 3,000 schools' tennis teams competing in the following three competitions in 2016:

  • Year 7&8 and Year 9&10 Competition 
  • National Championships (18U K/O Competition) 
  • Senior Students (Year 11-13 students only, autumn/winter)

Entry into Team Tennis Schools competitions is free for all schools and colleges in England, Scotland and Wales. The competition team encourage schools to sign up for Schools Tennis Membership where schools can gain access to resources and exclusive offers such as the chance to be part of the Schools Tennis Wimbledon Ballot.

Year 7&8 and Year 9&10 Competition

The aim of this competition is to provide players of all abilities with the opportunity to compete in a school team tennis competition, with more successful teams able to progress on a pathway to a National Final.

Online Entry is now OPEN and will close at 2pm on Wednesday 18 January 2017

Local league matches are played in the Summer Term between April through to July. The local league stage is organised by local league organisers where teams compete in localised leagues. The majority of teams play in Division 2 where winning teams can progress through to a Regional Finals Day in the Autumn Term.

Division 1 winners from the local leagues will progress through to knockout rounds from September, Regional Finals in November, with the National Finals taking place in December. The LTA Support Centre then organises the subsequent Knockout Stage; Regional Finals and the National Finals.

2017 Information:

  • Online Entry closed at 2pm on Wednesday 18 January 2017. If you still wish to enquire about entry please email schoolscompetition@LTA.org.uk
  • Entry is FREE. The first 400 schools that enter will receive some FREE Babolat Tennis balls in mid-March
  • Over 2,500 teams have entered the Year 8 & 10 Competition 2016
  • All teams that entered received a printed Captains' Guide in March including scorecards
  • League Organisers will contact all entered teams in their area in late January or early February. League organisers aim send out draws and fixtures to all entered teams in February

2017 Eligibility, Format & Scoring:

  • A player must be a registered member of the school on 24th April 2017
  • There are four events to enter; Year 7&8 Boys, Year 7&8 Girls, Year 9&10 Boys and Year 9&10 Girls
  • Each event requires 4 players in a team with the format being 4 singles and 2 doubles rubbers
  • Year 7&8 Boys and Year 7&8 Girls - A player must be in Years 7-8 or born between 1st September 2003 and 31st August 2005 inclusive
  • Year 9&10 Boys and Year 9&10 Girls - A player must be in Years 7-10 or born between 1st September 2001 and 31st August 2005 inclusive
  • All matches are Grade 7
  • Players can play in one event only
  • Each rubber is one set

National Championships

The aim of this competition is to provide players with the opportunity to compete for their school and become the best team in the country. The winners of the National Championships win the Aberdare Cup (Girls) and Glanvill Cup (Boys). On a bi-annual basis the winners of the National Championships are invited to compete in the ISF World Schools Championships where schools from England and Scotland have recently placed among the very best school tennis teams in the world.

Matches are played from March through to July. Teams compete in a knockout stage, which leads to a four day national final.

2017 Eligibility, Format & Scoring:

  • Players must be in Years 7-13 and born between 1st September 1997 and 31st August 2005 inclusive
  • There are two events to enter; boys and girls. Both events require 4 players with the format being 4 singles and 2 doubles rubbers
  • Each rubber is 2 sets, with a match tiebreak in place of any 3rd set
  • Matches are Grade 6 at the knockout stage and Grade 3 at the Finals
  • All rubber results from the knockout stage will be included in the Summer Season for the purposes of British Tennis Ratings. Singles results will be loaded from 1st April 2017

Senior Students

The aim of this competition is to encourage lower rated players to play competitive tennis and provide the team with an opportunity to compete in a National Final.

The entry period runs from June - September with local league matches being played October through to December. Winners of the local leagues progress through to the knockout rounds from January, with the National Final taking place in March.

2016 - 2017 Entry:

  • Free Entry for all schools & colleges in England, Scotland and Wales
  • Entry closed on 21 September 2016. Draws will be sent on Tuesday 27 September 2016

2016 - 2017 Eligibility, Format & Scoring:

  • Players must be rated between 7.1 and 10.2 as of 21st September 2016, or have no rating. Players must be in Years 11-13 and born between 1st September 1997 and 31st August 2001 inclusive
  • There are three events to enter; boys, girls or mixed
  • The boys and girls events require 4 players with the format being 4 singles and 2 doubles rubbers. The mixed event requires 2 boys & 2 girls in a team with the format being 4 doubles rubbers
  • Each rubber is one set
  • All matches are Grade 7

Winning teams from the Knockout Stage in February qualify for the National Finals taking palce at USN Bolton Arena on 10-11 March 2017 (Boys & Girls) and 11-12 March 2017 (Mixed).
