Day two: Putinseva defeats Klugman; Fery & Choinski into second round
Fourth seed and former Birmingham champion Yulia Putintseva, Arthur Fery and Jan Choinski booked their places in the second round to kick-start an action-packed day at the Lexus Nottingham Open.
Women's
World No.27 Putintseva defeated British wild card Hannah Klugman 6-2, 6-2 in the first match on centre court.
Despite six breaks of serve between them in the opening set, it was Putintseva who managed to use her experience on the grass to capitalise on some key errors from the British teenager in the opening set.
Klugman – coming off a final run at Junior Roland Garros – fought back in the second and managed to get a couple of service holds on the board in the early stages. However, a backhand pass from Putintseva to break at 3-2 set the Kazakh up to win the final four games in a row.
Second seed Clara Tauson also made a winning start to her campaign - defeating Australia's Kimberly Birrell 7-5, 6-2.
Leylah Fernandez came through a tough match against Suzan Lamens 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, and Dayana Yastremska knocked out ninth seed Olga Danilovic 6-4, 7-6(4).
Men's
British qualifier Fery got a statement win over former world No.9 Fabio Fognini - defeating the Italian 6-3, 7-6(5).
Fery showed great fight to come back from 5-3 down in the second set to knock out the nine-time ATP title-winner in front of a packed-out crowd in Nottingham.
In his third match in two days, Choinski came back to defeat world No.118 Eliot Spizzirri 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 13 minutes.
