Henry Patten becomes new ATP doubles world No.1 for the first time

• 1 minute read

Henry Patten has become the latest British star to reach world No.1 in the ATP rankings after finishing runner-up at Roland Garros.

Patten is the fifth British player to reach the top of the ATP doubles rankings in the Open Era, joining Lloyd Glasspool, Neal Skupski, Joe Salisbury, and Jamie Murray.

He overtakes Skupski as the world No.1 following another brilliant performance in Paris with Harri Heliovaara, adding to the duo's excellent season so far.

As well as being the No.1 ranked player in the world, the duo together are also top in the ATP Doubles Race for the season.

"It means a lot to us," Patten told BBC Sport. "I join a long list of other Brits who have also done it, so it's amazing to now be in their company and join them as an ATP world number one. It's an incredible achievement for me."

Patten and Heliovaara are in their third season together. It’s a partnership that has collected 12 titles, including two Grand Slams, two ATP Masters 1000s and one end of year finals.

Having joined forces in 2024, they won their first tournament together in Marrakech, just a few months before winning their maiden Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.

The British, Finnish duo followed it up with a second major at the start of 2025, winning a three-set epic against Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the Australian Open final.

They closed out last season with an impressive run that saw them win the Rolex Paris Masters and Nitto ATP Finals titles, setting them up for a brilliant start to their 2026 campaign.

So far this year, they have won four ATP titles – Adelaide, Doha, Dubai and Madrid – which is more than any other team on tour.

Following a successful clay court swing, they now turn their attention to the grass court season, where Patten will be hoping to become the first British player to win multiple men’s doubles titles.
