US Open 2025: Alfie Hewett & Gordon Reid open against American duo with five Brits across wheelchair tennis draws

• 1 MINUTE READ

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid begin their bid for a sixth US Open men’s wheelchair doubles title on Tuesday in New York with a contest against American duo Charlie Cooper and Conner Stroud as wheelchair tennis returns the final Grand Slam tournament of the year for the first time since 2023.

With the dates of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Tennis Event coinciding with the 2024 US Open, Paris 2024 men’s doubles gold medallists Hewett and Reid seek a sixth men’s doubles title in New York this year, having been unbeaten between 2017 and 2021.

World No.2 Hewett also begins his singles campaign on Wednesday against Cooper, one of two wild card entries for the men’s wheelchair draw alongside Stroud.

Hewett and Reid made history at the 2023 US Open, contesting the first ever all-British wheelchair singles final at a Grand Slam and world No.5 Reid returns to the New York with the confidence of having won his first singles title since 2023 over the weekend at the JTCC Championships in College Park, Maryland.

After last lifting a singles title at the LTA’s Bolton ITF2 Indoor event in February 2023, Reid said: “It's been too long (since my last singles title) for my liking, but I’m happy to get over the line today, it feels good. Obviously I’m trying to get in the best shape possible for next week (the US Open) and while I think I’ve still got a lot to improve on, I think we’ve achieved that.”

World No.6 Reid takes an eight-match unbeaten career record against Daniel Caverzaschi into Wednesday’s men’s singles first round against the Spaniard in New York.

Fellow Brits Andy Lapthorne and Greg Slade play South Africa’s Donald Ramphadi and Brazil’s Leandro Pena respectively in Wednesday’s first round of the quad singles.

Before then, Lapthorne partners the USA’s David Wagner in Tuesday’s quad doubles first round as they begin their bid for a third US Open quad doubles title together with a contest against South American duo Francisco Cayulef and Enrique Lazarte.

On the back of reaching his first Grand Slam doubles final at The Championships, Wimbledon, Slade makes his US Open debut alongside Australian Jin Woodman in the quad doubles on Tuesday. The first-time partnership takes on 2023 Wimbledon finalists Heath Davidson of Australia and Canada’s Robert Shaw.

British women’s No.1 Lucy Shuker has been drawn against six-time US Open champion Diede de Groot of the Netherlands in the women’s singles,

Meanwhile, Shuker begins her eighth US Open campaign on Tuesday with a women’s doubles match alongside Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands, with whom Shuker won the women’s doubles title in Eastbourne in 2024. Shuker and Griffioen play the USA’s Maylee Phelps and Japan’s Saki Takamuro.

The draw for the junior wheelchair event will take place later on Monday, with Britain's Ruben Harris, Lucas de Gouveia and Ellen Tribley set to compete.
