• 2 MINUTE READ
There will be five British players competing in the Nitto ATP Finals semi-finals over the weekend with Lloyd Glasspool, Julian Cash, Henry Patten, Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury all through to the final four.
It’s the first time that five players from one nation will compete in the semi-finals of the ATP’s season-ending event since 1992 (Australia).
Skupski and Salisbury qualified for the semi-finals after winning both of their opening matches against Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic, as well as Australian Open champions Patten and Harri Heliovaara, to finish top of the John McEnroe Group.
Salisbury – a two-time champion at the Nitto ATP Finals – is currently on a 12-match winning streak at the tour finals and will be hoping to complete his hat-trick over the weekend.
The Roland Garros and US Open runners-up will face off against the No.1 team of the season, Glasspool and Cash in the semi-finals.
The British duo lost their opening match at the Finals, but picked up victories against Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, as well as a group decider vs Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.
They were recently crowned as the ATP’s Year-End No.1 Doubles Team after a season in which they’ve won seven tiles, including the Wimbledon crown back in the summer.
Glasspool and Cash hold a 3-0 lead in their head-to-head against Skupski and Salisbury, including the Toronto and Doha finals, as well as a semi-final at the Lexus Eastbourne Open.
Two-time Grand Slam champions Patten and Heliovaara clinched their spot in the semi-final with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory against Arevalo and Pavic in the final match of their group.
In the second consecutive year that they’ve reached the last four in Turin where they will now take on home favourites Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli.
It will be a repeat of this year’s Australian Open final, where the British, Finnish team came through 6-7(16), 7-6(5), 6-3 in a three hour epic. They lead the head-to-head 2-1.
“I can’t wait to play in that atmosphere,” said Patten ahead of Saturday’s semi-final. “Whether the crowd is for or against you, to play on that court in front of those fans is electric. They’re playing unbelievable tennis and have saved their best until last.”
The Nitto ATP Finals semi-finals will take place on Saturday 15 November with the final on Sunday. You can watch the action live on Sky Sports and NOW TV.
