US Open 2026: Brits prepare for wheelchair events as draws are revealed

Three years on from Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid meeting in their historic 2023 US Open men’s singles final, the British No.1 and No.2 are again in different halves of the draw for the 2026 renewal of the final Grand Slam of the season.
Former world No.1, Stephane Houdet of France, will be Reid’s opponent on Wednesday as he bids to reach at least the last eight in New York for the third time in a row.
World No.5 Reid, who arrives in New York on the back of his successful title defence at College Park, Maryland, over the weekend, dropped just three games to Houdet when they met in the US Open semi-finals in 2023. He will hope for a similar performance on Wednesday as he attempts to book his place in the quarter-finals, where Tokito Oda is a likely opponent.
Hewett has reached the men’s singles final seven times in eight US Open appearances since 2017. The world No.2 and four-time champion opens his 2026 campaign against Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi, the player Hewett beat in the first round at Wimbledon in 2025, their only other previous meeting at a Grand Slam tournament.

Two-time US Open quad singles champion Andy Lapthorne has been dealt the toughest of all possible draws as he opens his latest campaign in New York against world No.1 Niels Vink, with Lapthorne the first player tasked with ending the Dutch top seed’s quest for a first calendar Grand Slam
Meanwhile, British quad singles No.2 Greg Slade will hope he can begin his second US Open title bid by recording a second successive win over Argentina’s Gonzalo Enrique Lazarte.
Lazarte had won all four of his matches against Slade before this season, with Slade prevailing in three sets earlier this season in the quarter-finals of the Daegu Open in Korea.
While the wheelchair singles draws don't begin until Wednesday, Tuesday will see the start of the doubles draws, with five-time US Open champions and 2025 finalists Hewett and Reid opening their campaign against Houdet and Zhenxu Ji.
The British top seeds beat Houdet and Ji in the semi-finals at The All England Club in July en route to their seventh Wimbledon title.
Four-time US Open quad doubles champion Lapthorne partners South Africa’s Leon Els in Grand Slam competition for the first time as the relatively inexperienced partnership faces American duo Andrew Bogdanov and David Wagner.
Meanwhile, Slade partners Australia’s Heath Davidson in a tough first round draw meeting with top seeds Guy Sasson and Vink, who are bidding to complete the calendar Grand Slam in quad doubles.
