County Tennis

The Performance Journey begins for many within County Tennis. Whether it’s attending a County Open Day where most get their first glimpse into the performance space, being invited to County Training and being fully embedded in a performance squad, or representing their county at County Cup; county tennis plays a huge role in harvesting talent for the Player Pathway.
Talent shows in many different forms, and it’s the role of our County Performance Leads to identify early signs of potential in young athletes.
Talent Characteristics - early signs of potential
- Attacking skills: Confident to attack
- Rallying qualities: Comfortable in the rally
- Defensive qualities: Chases every ball
- All court skills: Creative in play
- Athletic skills: Athletic qualities
- Great mover: Reads the ball
- Inner drive: Loves the game
- Competitive: Loves to compete
Talent Characteristics has been designed to influence a broad range of competencies and behaviours that could develop into the skills and characteristics needed to succeed as an elite player.
Talent Characteristics is not about predicting future champions but aims to attract and capture more athletic talent into the early stages of the Player Pathway and focused player development programmes. In a sport that can become very competitive from a young age, it is important to keep these characteristics at the forefront of early identification.
