Here are your standout performers from the month of October:
Men’s singles – Arthur Fery
21-year-old Arthur Fery earns his first Player of the Month award off the back of a breakout month on the ATP Challenger Tour. Having picked up his first win at Challenger level only a few months back at the Rothesay Open Nottingham, Fery has gone from strength-to-strength, with a highlight month in October.
The young Brit – who reached the top of the NCAA rankings in the last few years – progressing to his first ATP Challenger final in Mouilleron le Captif. Fery came through qualifying to win six matches en route to the final, including an impressive victory over former top 10 star David Goffin, before eventually finishing runner-up to Tomas Mahac.
Not only that but Fery also made the quarter-finals at Brest, with impressive wins over fellow Brit Ryan Peniston and another scalp over Goffin.
Capping off a brilliant month – Fery finished October at a career-high world No.269.
Women’s singles – Hannah Klugman
October was a landmark month for British rising star Hannah Klugman.
The 14-year-old Brit became the youngest player to ever qualify for a W100 event in Shrewsbury – a record previously held by Coco Gauff.
She didn't stop there however, going on to reach the quarter-finals at the W100 Shrewsbury, beating fellow British star Lily Miyazaki 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-2, before bowing out to second seed Oceane Dodin in three sets.
She then moved on to the W60 Glasgow where she had similar success – making the quarter-finals with wins over Elena Malygina and Olivia Gadecki.
Doubles – Joe Salisbury
Having clinched his third successive US Open title the month before, it was truly the rule of three for Britain’s Joe Salisbury, who bagged his third title of the season at the Vienna Open with Rajeev Ram.
Not only that, but it was the third time that the former world No.1 has won the indoor event in Vienna – adding to his titles in 2018 and 2019.
Salisbury and Ram came from a set down to beat ATP Masters Canada champions Marcelo Arevalo and Jean-Julien Rojer in the semi-finals before moving on to close out the title against Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow 6-4, 5-7, 12-10.
Wheelchair – Alfie Hewett
Alfie Hewett’s strong end to the season continued in Barcelona last month where he made the singles and doubles final at the Catalonia Open.
The now world No.1 defeated Tom Egberink and Maikel Sheffers before eventually losing out to Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez in the final 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Hewett then teamed up with usual partner Gordon Reid – narrowly ending the week as runners-up to Frederic Cattaneo and Stephane Houdet 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.
The tournament would be the perfect preparation for the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Masters – which may lead to Hewett returning to this spot next month as well…
