Day five: Nicholls & Mihalikova exit in consecutive WTA 1000 quarter-finals

Olivia Nicholls and doubles partner Tereza Mihalikova bowed out in the quarter-final of the Wuhan Open against Ekaterina Alexandrova and Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 39 minutes.

This was the second straight WTA 1000 women's doubles quarter-final that the British, Slovakian duo have reached in the last two weeks, having also exited at the same stage in Beijing.

Nicholls and Mihalikova overturned three breaks of serve in a gutsy opening set against Alexandrova and Siniakova. However, it was a difficult match on serve for the duo - winning just 48% points off their first serves - and a fourth break at 5-5 was all it needed for their opponents to eventually take a one set lead.

The British, Slovakian team had led 2-0 at the start of the second, but again were unable to build any momentum on serve. In a set that saw 11 break points between the two teams, Nicholls and Mihalikova came out on the wrong side - with Alexandrova and Siniakova winning the final three games from 4-3 down to close out the match.

Nicholls could be set for another career-high ranking this week - currently sitting at No.40 in the live WTA doubles rankings.
