Melbourne Open 2026: Alfie Hewett & Gordon Reid clinch first doubles title of the season

• 1 minute read

Britain’s Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid took home their first title of the season at the ITF WC 1000 Melbourne Open with Brits appearing in three finals.

Hewett and Reid clinched the title without dropping a set, finishing with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win over Spain’s Martin De La Puente and France’s Stephane Houdet.

It’s their third successive Melbourne Open title in their second final of the season so far (Brisbane).

They will now head to the Australian Open hoping to win a seventh straight title at Melbourne Park.

However, Hewett's bid for a third Melbourne Wheelchair Open men's singles title since 2022 ended in a 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 loss to top seed Tokito Oda today after an epic final that lasted three hours and nine minutes.

Hewett earned himself a 4-1 lead in the third and deciding set, but from 4-5 down he was twice forced to serve to stay in the contest and on the second occasion he saved two match points in the 12th game, but was unable to save a third match point.

Having returned to world No.1 in the men's singles rankings following his title in Brisbane, Hewett now looks set to return to world No.2 this coming Monday.

Elsewhere in the draw, Reid was beating De La Puente in the quarter-finals, before a frame snapped on his chair and he eventually lost out 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 6-0. Reid also reached the final at the Victorian Open last week.

Andy Lapthorne and Australian partner Heath Davidson reached their second quad doubles final of the year before finishing runners-up to top seeds, reigning Ronald Garros, Wimbledon and US Open champions Guy Sasson and Niels Vink.

Sasson and Vink took home the title after a 6-3, 6-0 final win over last week’s Adelaide runners-up.

Lapthorne and Greg Slade both exited in the quarter-finals of the quad singles draw and now join Hewett, Reid and Lucy Shuker at the Australian Open next week.
