Wimbledon 2024: Alfie Hewett & Gordon Reid through to men’s wheelchair doubles final

• 1 MINUTE READ

It will be an eighth consecutive Wimbledon final for Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid as the British duo cruised through their men’s wheelchair doubles semi-final on Friday evening.

Hewett and Reid defeated Tom Egberink and Maikel Scheffers 6-1, 7-6(12) in an hour and 52 minutes as they continue their pursuit of a sixth Wimbledon doubles title.

It’s the ninth time that Hewett and Reid have beaten the Dutch team in 11 meetings – their last coming in the Roland Garros semi-finals this year.

“It’s difficult to think too far ahead but these are the matches and stages we want to be playing on," Reid said on reaching yet another final in SW19. “We’re proud of our record here and we want to try and add to it – we’ll be ready on Sunday.”

His long-term doubles partner Hewett added, “The resilience we showed in those moments was great - we kept backing ourselves and managed to get the win.”

Despite Hewett having played for over two and a half hours earlier in the day in his singles victory over Gustavo Fernandez, the Brits looked full of energy in the opening stages.

The all-British duo got off to an electric start – clinching two breaks of serve in a dominant first set.

It looked like they were set for a routine win for the world No.1 and No.2, but in the second set, Egberink and Scheffers wouldn’t go down without a fight.

The Dutch team won their meeting in Rotterdam earlier this year in a match tie-break and the Brits knew that given the chance they could pose a serious threat.

As Hewett and Reid’s level dropped slightly, the Dutch pairing seized their opportunity and dictated much of the set. A solid overall performance saw them lead 3-1 and then 5-3 but the Brits held on to force a tie-break.

Hewett and Reid saved five set points, on their final service game and then through a close tie-break but on their third match point, Reid tucked away a clinical volley to book their place in yet another Wimbledon final.

Ben Bartram and Daniel Caverzaschi will have to return tomorrow to play their semi-final against second seeds Tokito Oda and Takuya Miki.
