2 MINUTE READ

The Rothesay Nottingham Open was originally known as the Nottingham Championships or Nottingham Lawn Tennis Tournament, running from 1887–1967. After being discontinued in 2008, it was then brought back in 2011 to the ATP Challenger Tour and ITF Women's Circuit. It was briefly re-established as an ATP World Tour 250 event on the men’s tour in 2015 and 2016, before returning to a Challenger event in 2017. Since 2015 it has been an international event on the women’s tour and is part of the British grass court season in the run up to the Wimbledon Championships. It’s had several different names and title partners over the years, including the John Player Open, Samsung Open, Aegon Open and the Nature Valley Open.

The men’s trophy is called the ‘Paul Hutchins Trophy’; being named after Paul Hutchins, who sadly passed away in March 2019. As a player, coach, captain, commentator, administrator and tournament director, Paul dedicated over 50 years of loyal service to tennis in Britain and in connection to tennis in Nottingham. Paul’s impact and influence on tennis was immeasurable, and he leaves behind him a sport that is unquestionably better.

The women’s trophy is called the ‘Elena Baltacha Trophy’ - named after Elena Baltacha “Bally”, the ex-British No.1 player who tragically died in May 2014 after a battle with liver cancer. Baltacha had a successful career in tennis, reaching the quarter-finals of four WTA tournaments, winning 11 ITF singles and four ITF doubles tournaments, representing her country at 12 Fed Cup ties and competing in both the ladies singles and doubles, with current Great Britain Billie Jean King Cup captain Anne Keothavong, at the London Olympic Games in 2012.
