Davis Cup 2026: Leon Smith discusses Ecuador challenge as Brits target Finals spot

We’re just one day away from the Lexus Great Britain Davis Cup team taking on Ecuador in their Davis Cup second round Qualifier.
The Brits are targeting a place in November’s Davis Cup Finals in Bologna and are set to take on Ecuador at the Copper Box Arena between 19-20 September.
British No.1 Arthur Fery will lead the charge in what will be just his second Davis Cup tie for his country. He’ll be joined by debutant Toby Samuel and Grand Slam-winning doubles specialists Henry Patten and Neal Skupski.
British No.2 Cam Norrie has withdrawn from the tie due to injury and has been replaced by Harry Wendelken who has received his first call-up to the team.
While the Brits arrive as favourites on paper due to ranking, Team Captain Leon Smith is not underestimating the Ecuadorians, who take the edge when it comes to Davis Cup experience and will be fuelled of confidence following their upset victory over Australia in the first round Qualifier.
“The great thing is every single one of the players sitting here have had brilliant years, so we’re in form,” Smith said in the pre-tie press conference.
“On ranking we are (favourites) but that’s not how it works out. We’ve been on the receiving end of that and we’ve also dealt it ourselves. You’ve got to think about your own game, your own headspace, respect the opponents, which we do.
“They’re a good team, they had a brilliant win in the last round."
