Lexus British Open Roehampton 2026: Alfie Hewett sets up semi-final clash against Gustavo Fernandez

• 2 minute read

Alfie Hewett faces a mouthwatering men’s singles semi-final meeting against 2024 champion Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina at the Lexus British Open Roehampton.

Reigning champion Hewett produced another commanding performance on Wednesday’s second day of play to beat China’s Ji Zhenxu 6-1, 6-1.

World No.2 Hewett defeated Ji in a major singles quarter-final for the third time in 12 months as he booked his place in the last eight  at the Wimbledon Qualifying and Community Sports Centre.

“Ji's always going to give me a tough match. The level and the intensity is going to be pretty fast, so I knew I had to be strong from the very first point,” said Hewett, who beat China’s world No.9 in the quarter-finals at the All England Club last July before securing another straight sets win their last eight meeting at the French Open.

“I served well again today, which is really nice to see, and that gives me the freedom to try and explore a little bit on the return games and do different things. It didn’t actually feel like a 6-1, 6-1 match, there were times I was 40-0 down and had break points against me, so to get through those moments was really good.”

Elsewhere, Ben Bartram and Japan’s Takuya Miki secured a thrilling 5-7, 6-3, (10-8) men’s doubles quarter-final victory over Spain’s Daniel Caverzaschi and Casey Ratzlaff of the USA to join Hewett and Gordon Reid in the last four. Defending champions Hewett and Reid have a bye into the last four.

Andy Lapthorne and Greg Slade were awarded a walkover in the quad doubles quarter-finals and now face the Netherlands' Sam Schroder and Australia’s Jin Woodman in the semis, having been denied the opportunity of playing the same duo in last week’s final at the Lexus Eastbourne Open.

Lapthorne and Slade were scheduled to face Schroder and Woodman in the title decider in Eastbourne before rain brough the last day of play to a premature conclusion, with the two pairs of finalists sharing the available ranking points and prize money.

Britain’s top two ranked quad division players didn’t enjoy such fortune in the quarter-finals of the quad singles as they took on higher-ranked opponents and last week’s Lexus Eastbourne Open singles finalists.

World No.8 Slade lost out to Australia’s world No.5 and Eastbourne champion Jin Woodman 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2, while Lapthorne bowed out against two-time French Open champion Guy Sasson 6-1, 6-1.
