Lexus British Open Roehampton 2025: Alfie Hewett & Gordon Reid set for finals

• 2 MINUTE READ

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid will contest two finals between them on Friday’s last day of the Lexus British Open Roehampton, with Hewett returning to the singles final for the third successive year and he and Reid targeting a fourth doubles titles in the last 10 years.

Hewett, who became the first British player to win the men’s singles title at the British Open in 2021, dominated the closing stages of both sets in his singles semi-final as he and Reid met for the 48th time on the ITF’s UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

Despite some close exchanges Hewett won the last 10 games against Reid to progress 6-2, 6-0 and set up another final against defending champion Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina.

Runner-up last year, Hewett said: “It definitely does not get any easier playing Gordon. We train a lot together so it’s never easy playing someone you know so well. Tomorrow I can hopefully serve more like that because that was a really good serving performance from myself today. I was really pleased.”

Fernandez beat Spain’s Martin de la Puente 6-2, 6-4 in his semi-final and, like 2021 and 2023 champion Hewett, will now also bid to claim a third British Open title after earning his first victory in 2017.

Hewett and Reid returned to centre court in Roehampton to beat Spain’s Dani Caverzaschi and China’s Zhenxu Ji 6-3, 6-3 and will now face Spain’s Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spaargaren of the Netherlands some 10 years on from the Brits winning their first British Open title.

Greg Slade very nearly joined Hewett and Reid in a singles final after the British No.2 produced an impressive performance against world No.2 Sam Schroder of the Netherlands. At a set and 5-0 up Slade looked set for the biggest win of his career and earned a match point against Schroder.

However, former world No.1 Schroder has not earned his status in the sport without possessing some impressive battling qualities of his own and although Slade recovered from 4-1 down in the final set, Schroder edged an incredible contest 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-5.

He will now play fellow Dutchman world No.1 and defending quad singles champion Niels Vink for this year’s title.

Reigning British Open and Paralympic champion and world No.1 Yui Kamiji will play another former British Open champion in Dutch player Aniek van Koot for the women’s singles title.

Kamji held off the challenge of China’s Wang Ziying 7-5, 6-2 in her semi-final, with Van Koot deflecting the challenge of Japan’s Manami Tanaka 6-2, 6-3.

Three of the four singles semi-finalists will also meet in the women’s doubles final, with Tanaka and Zhu Zhenzhen winning through to face China’s reigning Australian Open champions Wang Ziying and Li Xiaohui in a rematch of January’s doubles final at Melbourne Park.
