National Bank Open 2025: Emma Raducanu bows out to world No.7 Amanda Anisimova

• 1 MINUTE READ

British No.1 Emma Raducanu lost out in the third round of the National Bank Open to fifth seed and Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova.

The world No.7 put in a strong performance to defeat Raducanu 6-2, 6-1 in just over one hour as the American progressed into the fourth round in Montreal.

Despite having won both their previous meetings, Raducanu was unable to get a foothold in a match up against an opponent who has won 14 of her last 17 matches, including runner-up finishes at The Championships and the HSBC Championships.

Anisimova got off to the perfect start – coming back from 40-0 down to break the British star in the second game of the match.

Although the Briton broke back straight away, Raducanu continued to struggle on serve, managing just two holds in seven service games against the big-hitting American.

The fifth seed continued her momentum into the second set, racing out to a 4-0 to put the match almost beyond the reach of the 22-year-old Brit.

Raducanu managed to clinch a hold of serve to get on the scoreboard but Anisimova never waivered. The American only dropped two points on serve throughout the second set and was comfortably able to see out her first win over the former US Open champion.

Raducanu will now turn her attention to the Cincinnati Open with the main draw starting on Thursday 7 August – read our full event preview.

The young Briton has had a solid start to the hard-court season, picking up wins against Elena-Gabriela Ruse and 32nd seed Peyton Stearns in Montreal and making the semi-finals in Washington.

Julian Cash, Lloyd Glasspool, Henry Patten, Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski are all still in men’s doubles action in Toronto.
