Jan Choinski wins Bad Waltersdorf Challenger title as Harriet Dart, Maia Lumsden & Johannus Monday clinch doubles trophies

Catch up with all the latest from Britain’s tennis stars competing on tour last week – including singles and doubles titles at Challenger level and more trophies on the ITF Tour.

Choinski crowned champion in Austria

Jan Choinski headlined the British champions this week – clinching the Bad Waltersdorf Challenger title in Austria.

The 29-year-old won his fifth career ATP Challenger Tour singles title with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over second seed Vit Kopriva in the final.

Choinski – who has won two Challenger-level trophies so far this season – has currently risen 66 places in the live ATP rankings to world No.161. He’s one of nine British players ranked inside the ATP top 200.

The British start now has 16 career singles titles to his name – 14 of which have come on clay.

Jay Clarke also reached an ATP Challenger singles final in Targu Mures, Romania – finishing runner-up after another impressive week.

Clarke progressed to the final without dropping a set, before losing out to Italy’s Franco Agamenone 6-3, 6-4.

It marked Clarke’s seventh singles final of the season across the Challenger and ITF World Tennis Tours.

Dart, Lumsden & Monday lead doubles titles

There were also Challenger-level doubles titles for Harriet Dart, Maia Lumsden and Johannus Monday last week.

British duo Dart and Lumsden won the WTA 125 trophy at the Full Protein Caldas da Rainha Ladies Open in Portugal – their first title together as a team.

Dart and Lumsden defeated fellow Briton Madeline Brooks and Anastasia Tikhonova in the final 6-0, 6-3 to get their hands on the trophy.

The Brits have formed a strong partnership together this season, also making the semi-finals at the Lexus Eastbourne Open, Lexus Ilkley Open, Singapore Tennis Open and the Polish Open.

Meanwhile, over in the USA, former NCAA star Monday returned to the States to lift the Columbus Challenger trophy with Australia’s Patrick Harper.

Monday and Harper beat second seeds Theodore Winegar and George Goldhoff in the final 6-4, 6-3 as the duo sealed their second Challenger title together.  

Samuel and Gill lead British ITF titles

The Brits took home five titles in yet another successful week on the ITF World Tennis Tour.

Amongst them was 23-year-old Toby Samuel, who backed up his title-winning campaign last week with more silverware at the M15 Hurghada.

Samuel defeated fellow Brit and former top 100 star Liam Broady 6-1, 6-2 in the final to extend his winning run to 10 matches.

Felix Gill clinched his first title of the season at the M15 Kursumlijska Banja in Serbia – coming back from a set down to claim a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Mate Valkusz in the final.

The young Briton has now reached finals in three of his last four tournaments on the ITF Tour.

In doubles, Lui Maxted and Connor Thomson combined to win the M25 Setubal without dropping a set. They beat Rafael Izquierdo Luque and Francisci Rocha in the final 6-3, 6-4.

Former junior Australian Open boys’ doubles runner-up Viktor Frydrych won the M15 Hurghada with Timofei Derepasko thanks to a 6-3, 6-3 final victory over David Eichenseher and Michael Gloeckler.

Finally, James Hopper won his third ITF doubles title of the season with Braden Shick at the M15 Fayetteville. The British, American team won a tight final 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 against Ioan Alexandru Chirita and Alan Magadan.
