Hewett, Reid and Slade to contest doubles finals at Japan Open

• 2 minute read

British stars Alfie Hewett, Gordon Reid and Greg Slade will all compete in doubles finals at Saturday’s Japan Open, with Hewett and Reid also set for an 11th career meeting at WC1000 level in the singles draw.

It marks a significant milestone for quad British No.2 Slade, who will contest his first WC1000 final after joining forces with Brazil’s Leandro Peña. The British‑Brazilian duo sealed a hard‑fought 6‑1, 4‑6, 10‑4 victory over top seeds Francisco Cayulef and Gonzalo Lazarte.

The fourth‑seeded pairing, who are making their tournament debut together in Japan, recovered from 4‑1 down in the match‑deciding tie‑break to secure victory. Slade and Peña will now take on third seeds Sam Schroder and Jin Woodman in Saturday’s quad doubles final.

Meanwhile, in the men’s draw, the Japan Open remains one of the few major tournaments on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour where world No.2 Hewett has yet to lift the singles title. The second seed moved one step closer to rectifying that with a commanding 6‑2, 6‑4 win over Dutchman Tom Egberink.

There he will face his doubles partner and world No.5 Reid, who is a two‑time Japan Open champion having sealed the trophy in 2017 and 2018. Reid will be hoping to draw on his second title run, during which he defeated Hewett in the final four.

Reid booked his place in the last four after battling past world No.4 Gustavo Fernández 3‑6, 6‑4, 6‑2 in a match lasting two hours and two minutes. The win marked his fourth victory over the Argentine in their last five meetings.

Following their respective singles quarter‑final successes, reigning Paralympic champions Hewett and Reid teamed up once again in the men’s doubles draw, easing into their fifth Japan Open final together since 2016. The top‑seeded duo secured a convincing 6‑3, 6‑1 win over compatriot Ben Bartram and Brazil’s Daniel Rodrigues.

The 23‑time Grand Slam champions will face Spain’s Martín de la Puente and Egberink in Saturday’s men’s doubles final.
