Aimee Gibson wins first international padel title in Cairo

• 2 MINUTE READ

British No.3 Aimee Gibson has ticked off a big milestone in her padel career having claimed her first pro-level title at the FIP Promotion Cairo.

Gibson teamed up with Spain’s Paula Canivell Varona to defeat top seeds Denise Hoefer and Victoria Kurz in the final 6-3, 6-2.

The British, Spanish duo didn’t drop a set throughout the tournament, en route to lifting their first title together as a partnership.

They also beat Roaa Atreby and Yusra Hegy 6-1, 6-1 and Egyptian No.1 pair Mora Eshak and Laila El Nimr 6-1, 6-3 in their in the quarter and semi-finals.

Until now, Gibson’s best result at international level was a quarter-final at the FIP Promotion event in Beniganim, followed by three second round appearances at FIP Rise events in London, Norway and Sweden.

"My goal for 2024 was to try my best to win a FIP event," Gibson said. "To achieve this so early on in the season has given me a lot of confidence. I feel very proud of the work I've put in to accomplish this.

"I was so happy with my performance this week. The energy and fight we showed throughout each match was amazing and it was a joy to play with this feeling."

FIP Promotion events are the first level of professional competition on the Cupra FIP Padel Tour.

The Cupra FIP Tour feeds up to the Premier Padel Tour, which recently merged with the World Padel Tour and is now the main tour for the world’s leading players.

Gibson is just one of a number of British players now regularly competing on the international stage, including British No.1s Tia Norton and Christian Medina Murphy, Sam Jones, Louie Harris and Catherine Rose.

There has been plenty of British success to celebrate so far in 2024. Rose reached her first FIP final at the Rise event in Melbourne, before moving on to Sydney where she made the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, Medina Murphy impressed at the FIP Rise Viña del Mar, progressing to the semi-finals with Spain’s Belar Vera Lopez.
