George Loffhagen defeats compatriot Charles Broom to seal Lexus Roehampton Challenger title

Loffhagen reached the weekend’s showpiece without dropping a set and faced fellow Brit Charles Broom, who defeated the previous week’s champion Oliver Tarvet in his semi-final.

Both players started the match strongly, with the decisive break of the first set not coming until the penultimate game in favour of Loffhagen.

The second set looked to be a carbon copy of the first, with neither player giving the other a look in their service games, until a dominant show of returning in the fifth game saw Loffhagen take the advantage, before securing the title with another break in the final game, winning 7-5, 6-3.

After the match, Loffhagen said, “It was a really good week, played some good tennis, and managed to get over the line today. I thought I served good, I thought I tried to play aggressive, looked for my forehand a lot and just tried to back myself on all my matches.”

In the doubles, Tom Hands and Matthew Summers, fresh from their second Challenger title in a row the week before, faced fellow Brit Alastair Gray and American Alex Rybakov for the crown.

After already winning two Challenger titles this summer, Hands and Summers sealed the hat-trick by sealing a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

On the back-to-back titles, Summers said after the match, “It feels great. It's nice playing with Tom week in, week out for the past couple of months. I think we've really gelled well together and we're really good friends now as well. So just spending time together is fun and it makes the competition a bit more fun as well. We're super pleased and excited for what's to come.

LTA Tournament Director Sarah Wooding said, "It was great to see British success continue in week two of ATP Challenger action at the National Tennis Centre, with Tom Hands and Matthew Summers retaining the Doubles title and George Loffhagen defeating Charles Broom to win his first Challenger title on home soil.

"Despite poor weather forcing the finals indoors, it was an enjoyable week, and a big thanks to the NTC Operations team and wider tournament team for their hard work and support."

International tournaments such as the Lexus Roehampton Challenger are part of the LTA’s Performance Competitions Calendar (PCC), which provides significantly enhanced opportunities for British players at each age and stage of the performance player pathway on home soil. The calendar is designed to provide comprehensive opportunities for British players to play, earn ranking points and win prize money at home, throughout the year.

International action will return to British soil from 12 October, when a W35 event heads to Edgbaston.
