Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool crowned China Open men's doubles champions

• 2 minute read

Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool have clinched their third ATP title of the season after being crowned champions at the China Open.

Cash and Glasspool sealed their 11th ATP title together after beating Dutch pairing Sander Arends and David Pel 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 in the final - becoming the first all-British duo to lift the title in Beijing.

They now add the China Open title to the ATP 500 titles they claimed earlier this year in Barcelona and Washington.

Speaking on the victory, Glasspool said, “Every win is incredible and to win on a court like this in front of so many people. It’s an amazing crowd, luckily for us there hasn’t been many all-British combinations so if we win, we’re usually one of the first all-Brits to win.”

Meanwhile, Cash added, “An absolute pleasure to compete here in Beijing. We came all the way last year and unfortunately had to withdraw. To come here and pick up the trophy this year means a little extra for sure.”

Julian Cash & Lloyd Glasspool’s road to the China Open title

  • Final: bt. Sander Arends (NED) & David Pel (NED) 6-3, 3-6, 10-6
  • Semi-final: bt Alexander Erler (AUT) & Robert Cash (USA) 6-1, 7-6(2)
  • Quarter-final: bt. Alexander Zverev (GER) & Marcelo Melo (BRA) 6-2, 6-4
  • First round: bt. Karen Khachanov & Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-4

The former Wimbledon champions had been a dominant force throughout the tournament, reaching the final without dropping a set.

They maintained that level in the opening exchanges of Tuesday's final, breaking early and remaining rock solid during their service games. Cash and Glasspool won 80% of points behind their first serve and saved both break points they faced as they wrapped up the opening set in 33 minutes.

However, the Dutch duo responded well in the second and looked to spark the comeback. Arends and Pel converted their only break point of the set before holding serve the rest of the way and fending off two break points to level the match.

The British pair quickly regained control in the match-deciding tie-break, racing into a 8-4 lead and never looking back as they closed out their third ATP title of the season in an hour and 18 minutes.

The win now moves Cash and Glasspool a step closer to qualification for the Nitto ATP Finals. The British duo now sit 10th in the live doubles rankings, just 310 points behind ninth-placed Theo Arribage and Albano Olivetti.

They will now look to strengthen their chances of reaching Turin for the second consecutive year at this week's penultimate ATP Masters 1000 event in Shanghai.
