Roland Garros 2025: Cam Norrie reaches third round with straight sets win over Federico Gomez

• 2 MINUTE READ

British No.3 Cam Norrie punched his ticket into the third round at Roland Garros after a straight sets victory over Argentina’s Federico Gomez.

Norrie had too much physically for the world No.144 and after a close first set the Brit saw out a 7-6(7), 6-2, 6-1 victory in two hours and 16 minutes.

The 29-year-old is now into the third round at Roland Garros for the fourth time in five years – his career-best result in Paris so far.

The British star backs up what was one of the results of the first round, knocking out former world No.1 and 11th seed Daniil Medvedev in five sets.

“It was very tough – yesterday I woke up and it felt almost like I’d had a massive night, and I had a bit of a hangover from that match with Daniil. It’s been a while since I’ve had a match like that.

“It was very different conditions (today) but once I found my footing and got through that first set it was a nice release, and I was able to stay calm and play solid."

In the third round, Norrie will face British No.2 and fellow Texas Christian University alumni Jacob Fearnley - guaranteeing a Brit in the fourth round.

“Physically I felt really good, my body is feeling good, I’m feeling fit, I’m moving well so that’s good.

“I’ll take the momentum, that’s been a difficult thing for me to gain, I’ve got it now and I want to keep going, keep plying and enjoy playing at this level because it’s a lot of fun.”

It was a shaky start for Gomez who appeared to be dealing with a shoulder issue. The Argentinian hit three double faults on his first service game to help Norrie to a 3-0 lead.

While Gomez may have been struggling physically, he quickly shifted his game plan and just started swinging for every ball – trying to get Norrie out of the long rallies and win points off early strikes off his groundstrokes.

Throughout the rest of the first set his tactic seemed to work. Norrie withdrew further towards the back of the court to handle the pressure and Gomez managed to fight his way back to force a tie-break.

Norrie saw six set points come and go as Gomez reached 24 winners in the opening set alone, but it took just one costly mistake the seventh time of asking to give the Brit the one set advantage.

Gomez had put everything into the first set and after Norrie managed to take it, the former world No.10s fitness and physicality shone through.

The Argentine couldn’t reach the level of the opening set and Norrie struck quickly with double break in a clinical second set.

Norrie will have been please to rifle through the final two sets in just over an hour after his epic in the first round – finishing the match by comfortably reeling off the last five games in a row.

Earlier in the day, there were second round exits for both Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal.

Boulter lost against Australian Open champion and seventh seed Madison Keys 6-1, 6-3 in her first match on Court Philippe-Chatrier, while Kartal bowed out to Marie Bouzkova 6-1, 6-4.
