Lexus Nottingham Open 2025: Arthur Fery, Ryan Peniston & Jan Choinski get off to winning starts

The Brits have got off to an electric start in the men’s singles at the Lexus Nottingham Open with a series of upset wins in the opening round already.
Ryan Peniston closed out day one by knocking out Colombian fifth seed Daniel Elahi Galan 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to get things underway on the Nottingham centre court.
Jan Choinski won his third match in two days up against Eliot Spizzirri 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 13 minutes
Then earlier today, British qualifier Arthur Fery took down former world No.9 Fabio Fognini 6-3, 7-6(5) to reach the second round of an ATP Challenger event for the second time this season.
It’s the second time Fery has defeated a former top 25 player at Nottingham, having previously knocked out American Steve Johnson in his only previous main draw win at this event.
The British star now has three former top 10 wins under his belt, having also beaten David Goffin twice in 2023.
“It was a great match, a good win and I’m happy with how I fought,” Fery reflected. “It wasn’t easy up against a player so talented who had a lot of ups and downs, but I’m glad I dug it out.
“It’s great for confidence – it’s always good to beat those guys, mentally it can be tough coming into those matches and you play the name. I did a good job today of focusing on myself and doing what I had to do.
“In terms of results that’s up there (this season), it’s only my fifth tournament with injuries. Really happy to get three wins so far."
Fery – who is supported by the LTA Pro Scholarship Programme – made the most of his experience playing in Nottingham this week having come through qualifiers and looked far more comfortable on the surface than his Italian opponent.
An early double break gave the Briton a strong platform to see out the first set in just 29 minutes.
Fognini was looking increasingly frustrated as the 22-year-old former Stanford University player was able to stay on top in the rallies and generally striking the ball much cleaner. However, a minor blip from Fery on a shaky service game at 4-3, gave the Italian the chance to serve for the set.
Fery did well to reset – saving set point to eventually go on and force a tie-break before sealing an impressive victory.
Choinski is already making himself well acquainted with the grass courts at the Lexus Nottingham Tennis Centre, having already played three three-set matches en-route to the second round.
After battling past Alibek Kachazov and Paul Jubb on Sunday, the world No.208 came back from a set down to knock out Spizzirri.
The Brit saved two break points in the second set to level the scores and lost just four points on his first serve in an impressive third set.
In the second round, Fery will face Terence Atmane of France, Choinski is set to play Jaime Faria and Peniston could be set for a clash with fellow Brit Jack Pinnington Jones.
