Great Britain Billie Jean King Cup history, titles & records

The Billie Jean King Cup is the biggest women’s international team competition in tennis - also known as the World Cup of tennis.

Great Britain is one of a handful of countries who have competed in the tournament every year since its inauguration and have a long-standing history at the tournament.

Here’s everything you need to know about the history of the Great Britain Billie Jean King Cup team, including past results, titles, records and captains.

When did Great Britain start playing in the Billie Jean King Cup?

Great Britain first competed in the first Billie Jean King Cup - then known as the Fed Cup in 1963. They featured in the inaugural tournament which was hosted at the Queen’s Club in West London.

There, Great Britain reached the semi-finals but were beaten by eventual champions USA.

How many times has Great Britain won the Billie Jean King Cup?

Great Britain have never won the Billie Jean King Cup title, although they have come close.

They have reached the finals on five occasions, 1967, 1971, 1972, 1981 and 2022. Great Britain is one of only four nations to have participated every year since the tournament's inception.

How did the Great Britain Billie Jean King Cup team do in 2025?

In 2025, Great Britain beat Germany and the Netherlands in the Qualifiers to reach the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen.

They went on to beat Japan in the quarter-finals thanks to singles victories from Sonay Kartal and Katie Boulter to reach the semi-finals for the third time in four years.

However, they lost out on a place in the final after Emma Navarro and Jessica Pegula secured wins for USA in the singles rubbers.

The Brits will return to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in 2026 after causing an upset win over Australia during their Qualifier back in April.
