Great Britain defeat Norway to reach Davis Cup Qualifiers second round

The Lexus Great Britain Davis Cup are through to the 2026 Davis Cup Qualifiers second round after securing victory over Norway in Oslo.

Jack Draper gave the Brits the early lead on Thursday after securing a straight sets victory over Viktor Durasovic in his first competitive match since August 2025. Then, it was over to British No.2 Cam Norrie who showed his experience to see off rising star Budkov Kjaer.

Doubles duo and reigning Wimbledon champions Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool came through a third set tie-break against Nicolai Budkov Kjaer and Viktor Durasovic in the first match on day two to secure the win for GB.

Jacob Fearnley closed out the match with an impressive comeback win over Budkov Kjaer in the third set match tie-break.

Great Britain will play either Ecuador or Australia in the Davis Cup Qualifiers second round.

Draper said: "We’ve done a really good job and played some really good tennis. It was a bit different with Casper (Ruud) not playing, but we’ve done our job and looking forward to the rest of the competition."

Match one: Draper clinches victory on Davis Cup return

Draper made a winning statement on his return to competitive tennis - beating Norwegian No.3 Durasovic 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour.

"It’s really good to play here in Oslo and have my first match in a long time," Draper said in his on-court interview. "To get a point on the board for Great Britain. I haven’t played Davis Cup in a long time so it’s good to be out here and I’m proud of my performance today."

Stepping onto the match court for the first time in five months, Draper showed little sign of nerves against the Norwegian star. He kicked off his opening service game with a confident hold to love before immediately turning up the pressure on return.

A cross-court forehand pushed long by the Norwegian handed Draper two break points, and he needed just one opportunity to seize an early lead.

Draper continued his impressive start throughout the opener. A winner at the net brought up a further two break points on the Durasovic serve. With the pressure mounting on the world No.313, an untimely double fault gifted the double break before the British No.1 served out the set in just 27 minutes.

The three-time ATP titleholder stayed on the front foot and picked up where he left off in the second set. A fortunate net cord trickled over to the Norwegian’s side of the court to clinch the opening break as the Brit raced into a 4–0 lead.

The reigning Indian Wells champion eventually converted his second match point after the Norwegian sent a backhand long, sealing Draper's second Davis Cup win for his nation.

Match two: Norrie battles past Norwegian No.1

It was a tricky challenge for Norrie, who fought hard to overcome rising star Budkov Kjaer 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 23 minutes in the second match of the tie.

"It was an amazing start for Jack - it’s not easy to come back from that injury he’s had and to play a match where he’s a big favourite", Norrie said. "He was really calm, he played really well and he enjoyed it - that gave me a lot of confidence to come out and play free."

The 19-year-old - who made headlines last season by winning four ATP Challenger titles - piled the pressure on the Briton and was rewarded with a break point in the fourth game, which Norrie managed to fend off.

Norrie managed to raise his level when he needed it most. At 4-4, he brought an end to Budkov Kjaer’s run of 16 successive points on serve and went on to seal the decisive break to take the first set.

Former Wimbledon boys’ singles champion Budkov Kjaer appeared to be in the driving seat early in the second set after breaking Norrie in the third game to open up a 4-1 lead but the five-time ATP titleholder drew on all his experience to overturn the deficit and claw back level.

From there, Norrie was firing on all cyclinders. At 4-4, the Brit struck a thunderous forehand winner to break for a second time and shift the momentum firmly back in his corner.

The Norwegian threatened one final twist with a break point as Norrie served for the match, but the world No.26 produced back-to-back aces to set up match point. Norrie held his nerve before calmly closing out his fifth consecutive game and seal his 10th victory for his country.

Match three: Cash & Glasspool see out British victory

Cash and Glasspool completed the victory for Great Britain after coming through a tough test against Budkov Kjaer and Durasovic 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5).

"Unbelievable to play on this court," said Cash. "It’s so nice having this support when we’re away from home. It feels like we’re at home. It means the world to get our first point for GB and to close the tie."

Last year’s No.1 doubles team in the world broke the Norwegian teenager on his opening service game to race out to a 3-0 lead and take control of the set.

Cash and Glasspool came away from Great Britain’s win over Poland slightly disappointed not to have won on their debut and the Wimbledon champions and were out to prove a point against Norway.

With set points facing the Durasovic serve, Glasspool broke down the Norwegian’s backhand to take the opener in 32 minutes.

Staring down a Davis Cup exit, the Norwegians came out swinging freely in the second set and got their reward. Much to the delight of the home crowd, Budkov Kjaer and Durasovic broke Cash’s serve twice to level the score at one set apiece.

In an edgy third set, the Brits saw two break points come and go at 4-3 before heading into deciding tie-break.

It was advantage Great Britain as Cash pounced across the face of the net to hit a backhand volley winner, setting up two match points at 6-4. With the chance to serve out the tie, Cash fired an unreturnable serve down the tee – firing the Brits into the next round.

Match four: Fearnley rounds off tie with a win

Fearnley added to the British success with an impressive 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 comeback win against Budkov Kjaer.

Fearnley won on his Davis Cup debut in the equivalent tie against Japan last year, but found himself behind early against the 19-year-old. The Briton missed a forehand by a fraction to set up two break points before hitting a double fault to fall 4-2 behind.

The Next Gen semi-finalist took an early lead in the second set as well – guiding a forehand winner past Fearnley at the net to break – but the Brit responded well to level at 2-2.

It gave Fearnley a boost of confidence to break on the Norwegian’s next service game with a clean return winner before going on to serve out the set.

The third set was decided as a 10-point tie-break. Having led through much of the breaker, Fearnley brought the heat on his forehand to set up two match points, before punching away a volley to make it a clean sweep for Great Britain.
