Great Britain vs Norway preview

The Lexus GB Davis Cup team will bid to reach the Qualifiers second round for the first time, when they take on Norway at the beginning of February.

The Brits will arrive with a 2-0 advantage over the Norwegians, having claimed victory in their previous two meetings which took place in the mid-20th century. They last faced each other in 1958 where Great Britain won all five matches contested.

Leon Smith's side will be boosted by the return of British No.1 Jack Draper who could be set to make his first appearance since last year's US Open.

Draper has been sidelined for the past five months through injury but is eyeing a return to action against Norway. The former world No.4 has not featured in the Davis Cup since the 2024 Group Stages in Manchester but will be hoping to make a winning comeback should he be selected to play.

Meanwhile, Cam Norrie is back in the squad following his memorable performances during the Great Britain’s World Group I tie against Poland back in September. The British No.2 played an instrumental role in securing a place in this year's Qualifiers after winning both of his singles matches against Poland’s Tomasz Berkieta and Olaf Pieczkowski.

Those victories proved to be the catalyst for a strong end to the season, with Norrie going on to defeat world No.1 Carlos Alcaraz en route to the third round of the Paris Masters before finishing runner-up at the Moselle Open.

Norrie has made a bright start to his 2026 campaign, reaching the third round at the Australian Open and is expected to be a key figuring in the upcoming tie against Norway.

World No.1 doubles duo Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash could give Smith’s side the edge heading into the tie. The all-British pair were the standout doubles team on the ATP Tour last year – clinching seven titles, including their maiden Grand Slam at  Wimbledon, and finishing the season as year-end world No.1s for the first time in their careers.

Should they be selected, Cash and Glasspool will be targeting their first Davis Cup win after suffering defeat on debut against Poland last year.

Completing the line-up is Jacob Fearnley, who could be in line to contest his second Davis Cup tie. The British No.3 made a winning start to his Davis Cup career by defeating former world No.4 Kei Nishikori at the 2025 Qualifiers, and will be looking to rediscover that form against Norway.

Despite the British team boasting five players ranked inside the top 100 across singles and doubles, Norway should not be underestimated - particularly if they are able to call on their highest-ranked player, Casper Ruud who is imminently awaiting the arrival of his first child.

The world No.13 will arrive in Oslo off the back of reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open and will be a pivital player for Norway in the upcoming tie.

Ruud knows exactly what it takes to win on the Davis Cup stage - having racked up an impressive 22-5 win record at the tournament and will be gunning to spearhead his nation to an upset win over the Brits.

However, rising star Nicolai Budkov Kjaer represents another strong weapon in Anders Haseth's side and will have a significant role to play. The 19-year-old made a name for himself during his junior playing years - becoming the first Norwegian to win a junior Grand Slam singles title in 2024 at Wimbledon.

Last year proved to be a breakthrough year for Budkov Kjaer, who claimed four ATP Challenger titles and climbed 464 places in the rankings to finish the year ranked world No.135. Despite still being new to the tour, the young star has already competed in five Davis Cup ties and holds a 4-4 win record.

He'll be joined by Viktor Durasovic, Andreja Petrovic and Lukas Hellum Lilleengen to complete the five-strong squad.
