Match four: Norrie completes British win

Cam Norrie wrapped up the tie for Great Britain with a dominant serving performance against Olaf Pieczkowski – winning 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 20 minutes.

“It was a completely different match to yesterday but I liked the match up,” Norrie said. “I was able to play long, physical points which took his legs a little bit.”

Pieczkowski was able to save three break points on only his second service game, but it was clear from the start that the Polish star would face an uphill battle against the solid hitting from Norrie.

The former world No.8 turned the opening set into a grueling task for Pieczkowski, who competed well to stay within touching distance of the Brit but at 4-4 the long rallies started to take their toll.

Norrie produced a piece of magic with a wide angled pass to set up his sixth break point, before Pieczkowski finally gave way – allowing the Brit to go on and serve out the set.

The British No.2 was clinical in the second set – hitting a rocket of a backhand return to break at 3-3 and put the match almost beyond doubt.

It was an impressive serving display from Norrie, who didn’t lose a single point on serve in the second set. With a place in the 2026 Qualifiers on the line, the 30-year-old sealed his sixth straight hold to love to seal the win for his country.

Match three: Polish doubles duo stun Brits

Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool narrowly lost a close doubles rubber against Jan Zielinski and Karol Drzewiecki 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) in two hours and nine minutes.

The Wimbledon champions and No.1 ranked doubles duo seemed to have the upper hand in the opening set – breaking Zielinski on his second service game to edge in front.

The Polish team had their chances to come back and Glasspool had to make two pinpoint wide serves to save break back points at 5-3. After 44 minutes, the Brits managed to wrap up the set after Zielinski dumped a return into the net on their second set point.

However, momentum took a huge shift following a hold on a lengthy service game from Zielinski in the fourth game of the second set. The Poles went on to break Glasspool to love in the next service game and won 10 consecutive points to move 5-2 in front and eventually level the score.

Into a tight third set and neither team was able to generate any real opportunities on the return of serve – both sides winning 85% (Poland) and 88% (Great Britain) points on first serve heading into a deciding tie-break.

The nerves appeared to kick in in the tie-break with five straight mini breaks before the Polish team got a crucial hold to take a 5-2 lead. The Brits managed to save three match points, but having set up a fourth with an inch perfect lob, Drzewiecki served out a first win for Poland.

Match two: Dream debut for Fery

Arthur Fery delivered an impressive performance to beat Olaf Pieczkowski 6-4, 6-2 on his Davis Cup debut to give GB a two match cushion heading into day two.

“Nothing’s easy, playing away in the Davis Cup,” Fery said. “It’s tricky, rankings don’t mean anything. It was a big fight today – I think the match was tougher than the score showed.

“I’m really happy to have won my first match at the Davis Cup. I’m very proud and happy to be part of the Great Britain Davis Cup team and hopefully we can keep doing well.”

Fery couldn’t have hoped for a better start for the new LTA Colour Holder No.331. The 23-year-old broke in the opening game and was incredibly solid on the return throughout the contest.

Despite the added pressure of being one match down in the tie already and a break behind, Pieczkowski came back to level at 3-3 after Fery dragged a backhand wide – but the Pole struggled to keep the momentum going.

The Polish star missed two routine forehands on his serve at 4-4 to gift Fery the break needed to go on and take the opening set with relative comfort.

Fery – who recently won his first ATP Challenger Tour singles title in Barranquilla – broke on the opening game of the set, dealing a dagger blow to Pieczkowski.

On the cusp of a first win for his country, Fery showed excellent resilience to see off five break points leading 3-2 – not only holding but going on to break in the following game.

In one of the biggest moments of his career to date, Fery stayed as cool as you like to serve out his first Davis Cup victory in an hour and 18 minutes.

Match one: Norrie shows composure to give Britain the lead

Cam Norrie sealed the opening victory for Great Britain, overcoming a gutsy performance from Poland’s Tomasz Berkieta to win 7-6(9), 6-4.

Norrie showed his quality to come through in an hour and 40 minutes and get his first Davis Cup win since 2023.

“It’s nice to be back playing for my country,” Norrie said. “It’s my first time here. Tomasz is a young up-and-coming player, he’s very talented, got a big serve and hits the ball very well off both sides. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, not much rhythm – he played really well today and challenged me.”

The 30-year-old came closest to breaking in the first set, leading 5-4 with deuce on the 2024 Roland Garros finalists’ serve. However, Berkieta kept his nerve to confidently slap a forehand winner past Norrie to clinch the game before eventually forcing a tie-break.

The Briton had to stare down two set points at 6-4 in the tie-break but Berkieta went too big on his shots in crucial moments – making key errors off both wings.

Norrie continued to battle and used experience to his advantage and the pressure told. At 9-9, the Pole hit a double fault and on his fourth set point Norrie hit big lefty out-swinging serve to clinch the set after an hour.

Eager to stay on the front foot, Norrie got the first break of the match early in the second set. A rather deflated looking Berkieta left an easy volley only for it to drop in before making another costly mistake on break point.

Berkieta had a break back point with Norrie trying to serve out match but couldn’t make it count as Norrie’s third ace helped wrap up a hard fought win for his country.
