Davis Cup 2025: Great Britain defeat Poland to reach 2026 Qualifiers

• 3 MINUTE READ

The Lexus Great Britain Davis Cup team will compete in the 2026 Qualifiers for the 2026 Finals after defeating Poland 3-1 in a tough away tie.

Two singles victories for British No.2 Cam Norrie and a debut Davis Cup win for Arthur Fery was enough to see off the home side in a pivotal World Group I clash at the Polsat Plus Arena in Gdynia.

The victory means that next year, Great Britain will feature in the Davis Cup Qualifiers. In the 2026 Qualifiers, GB will have to win two matches through the season to reach the Finals. If they lose their first round of qualifying, they will return to the World Group I again.

After the tie, LTA Head of Men's Tennis and GB Davis Cup Captain Leon Smith said: "The most important thing is that we got the job done in a tie like this. Obviously Poland were missing their top two players, we were missing our No.1 option in Jack Draper but we have very good options with Cam, Jacob, Arthur and we have a very strong doubles team.

"I think we did a very professional job. It was good to get Arthur his debut and winning which is a great experience for him. Then you have Cam Norrie in your team, who is so rich in experience. We didn’t drop a set in the singles which I think shows the respect we gave the opposition.

"We can look forward now to the draw for next year. I sense there’s an appetite for the players to play which is really good, so hopefully we can go with a strong team and try and go as far as we can."

Great Britain 3-1 Poland

  • Match one: Cam Norrie (GBR) Tomasz Berkieta (POL) 7-6(9), 6-4
  • Match two: Arthur Fery (GBR) bt. Olaf Pieczkowski (POL) 6-4, 6-2
  • Match three: Julian Cash & Lloyd Glasspool (GBR) lost vs Karol Drzewiecki & Jan Zielinski (POL) 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6)
  • Match four: Cam Norrie (GBR) bt. Olaf Pieczkowski (POL) 6-4, 6-4

Three of the four British players – Fery, Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool – were all making their debut for Great Britain.

They have now earned LTA Colour Holder status, which acknowledges, recognises and celebrates players, past and present, who have represented Great Britain in the Davis CupBillie Jean King Cup and Wheelchair Tennis World Team Cup, as well as at the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

Norrie came into the tie as GB’s most experienced and highest ranked singles player and the former world No.8 set the tone in his opening rubber against 2024 Roland Garros boys’ singles finalist Tomasz Berkieta.

Facing a young player with very little to lose – Norrie showed his nerve in the big moments to get GB on the board with a 7-6(9), 6-4 win.

The former Indian Wells champion had to save two set points against the big-serving Pole in the opening set before taking the only break of the match early in the second.

It was then over to 23-year-old Fery for his maiden appearance in a GB shirt. Coming in to replace the injured Jacob Fearnley, Fery looked like a Davis Cup veteran with an impressive 6-4, 6-2 win over Olaf Pieczkowski to give the Brits a two match cushion heading into day two.

Fery saw off five break points leading 3-2 in the second as he reeled off the last three games in a row to clinch his first win for his country.

Wimbledon champions and No.1 ranked ATP doubles team Cash and Glasspool came out on day two looking to wrap up the tie for Great Britain, but Poland had other ideas.

The team of Karol Drzewiecki and Jan Zielinski came back from a set down to clinch a deciding set tie-break 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) and give the Polish side a lifeline in the tie.

It was then over to Norrie once again to put the tie beyond doubt against Pieczkowski and the former Wimbledon semi-finalist delivered.

Norrie lost just three points on serve to beat the Polish star 6-4, 6-4 and complete the victory for the British team. It marks Norrie’s eighth singles victory at the Davis Cup.
