• 2 MINUTE READ
Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid secured the ideal preparation for next week’s wheelchair draws at The Championships, Wimbledon after they clinched the men’s singles and doubles titles between them at the Lexus British Open Roehampton.
Hewett beat defending champion Gustavo Fernandez 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to claim his third British Open singles title since 2021, while he and Reid raced past Spain’s Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spaargaren of the Netherlands 6-0, 6-2.
Hewett changed his tactics during the second set of the singles final, earning greater success with his slice returns and fought back from 3-1 down in the deciding set to earn his fifth singles title of 2025.
The World No.2 said: “Playing on home turf is a really special feeling and you want to do as well as you can, especially in the lead up to an event like Wimbledon. It’s been a great week and I’ve been building up the layer as the week’s gone on, which is want you want to do.
“The first set and a half Gusti was in control and I found it very difficult out there, but to be able to find ad a way and get myself back in the match, I’m extremely happy.”
This is an unbelievable event. As players we want to have ideal preparation going into a Grand Slan and plenty of opportunities to practise on the grass and the LTA have done such a great job of giving us opportunities to perform on pretty big arenas around the country in Eastbourne, Nottingham and at Queen’s and this adds to it.”
Hewett and Reid, who are 23-time Grand Slam champions, raced through the opening set of the men’s doubles final after facing just one break point and finished off a dominant performance in style for their fourth British Open title since 2015.
Reid said: “We’re very happy with the performance today and happy with the result. Those guys (De la Puente and Spaargaren) are a dangerous team so we had to play well and I think we did that today. It’s great preparation for all of us to be here on these courts this week, so big thanks to Kirsty (Thomson, LTA Tournament Director) and the team for a great event.”
World No.1 Yui Kamiji of Japan retained her women’s singles title after defeating Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands 6-0, 6-4, while top seed Niels Vink also retained his quad singles title following his 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory over fellow Dutch player Sam Schroder.
Japan’s Manami Tanaka and Zhu Zhenzhen of China sealed the women’s doubles title, defeating Australian Open champions and all-Chinese partnership Wang Ziying and Li Xiaohui 6-7(4), 6-3, 10-6.
Meanwhile, Vink partnered Guy Sasson of Israel to lift the quad doubles title after beating Schroder and Turkey’s Ahmet Kaplan 6-2, 6-3.
