Nitto ATP Finals: Looking back at past British champions
As the curtains draw on the 2025 season, the spotlight turns to Turin where eight of the world’s top singles and doubles teams will battle to be crowned year-end champions at the Nitto ATP Finals.
For British tennis fans, there’s plenty to get excited about with the doubles field including five Brits for the first time. Reigning Wimbledon champions Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool lead the charge and are joined by Australian Open men’s doubles winner Henry Patten and Roland Garros and US Open runners-up Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury.
Before this year’s tournament gets underway, we take a look back at British past champions and some of the standout performances at the year-end showpiece.
British singles champions at the Nitto ATP Finals
Former world No.1 Andy Murray is the only British tennis player to have lifted the singles title at the Finals, having etched his name on the trophy in 2016 - the most decorated year of his career.
The 2016 season saw Murray lift nine titles, including the Wimbledon men’s singles title and Olympic gold at the Rio Games before setting his sights on the ATP Finals.
His impressive form led him to overtake Novak Djokovic to sit at the top of the ATP rankings and knew that a strong campaign at the Finals in London would boost his chances of becoming the year-end world No.1 for the first time.
Heading into the 2016 Finals, Murray was drawn in Group John McEnroe, alongside then reigning US Open champion Stan Wawrinka, Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori. He secured three victories to top the group and progress to the final four where he came through a tight three-set encounter against Canada’s Milos Raonic, 5-7, 7-6(5), 7-6(9).
The reward for that victory? A final clash against Djokovic to settle the Nitto ATP Finals champion and the year-end No.1 position.
There, Murray produced a near-perfect performance against his rival - going on to record a 6-3, 6-4 win and become the first British man to claim the title and finish an ATP Tour season as the year-end world No.1.
British doubles champions at the Nitto ATP Finals
As far as doubles champions go, Salisbury is a two-time Nitto ATP Finals champion, having swept up back-to-back crowns in 2022 and 2023 alongside America’s Rajeev Ram.
12 months on from narrowly losing out in the 2021 final, Salisbury and Ram ensured they wouldn’t fall at the final hurdle again. They overcame Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 7-6(4), 6-4 to finally get their hands around the trophy and completing their unbeaten run.
In doing so, Salisbury became the first Briton to win the year-end championships doubles title.
One year later, the three-time US Open-winning pair returned to Turin to begin their title defence after what had been a turbulent season for the pair.
After sealing their third consecutive title at Flushing Meadows, picking up the Erste Bank Open trophy and reaching the final four at the Rolex Paris Masters, Salisbury and Ram built up their momentum at the perfect time and went on to successfully retain their title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in the final.
This year, Salisbury will return to the tournament where he left his mark two years ago alongside fellow Brit Skupski. The pair have been one of the most consistent partnerships on the ATP Tour this year, having made five finals, including at Roland Garros and the US Open.
Other standout British performances at the Nitto ATP Finals
While there might only be two Brits currently on the Nitto ATP Finals roll of honour, several others have left their mark over the years.
Skupski qualified for the Finals in 2022 and 2023 alongside Dutchman Wesley Koolholf, with their best result coming in the semi-finals in 2022. Glasspool and Patten have also reached the final four on their tournament debut in 2022 and 2024 respectively, with both players partnering Finland’s Harri Heliovaara.
Patten will once again team up with Heliovaara this time out in Turin while Glasspool will be hoping to lead he and debutant Cash to an eighth title of the season.
While he’s not qualified for this year’s tournament, Jamie Murray has been a regular feature in the draw over the years, having made five appearances at the year-end Finals. His best results came between 2016-2018 where he reached the semi-finals three years in a row alongside Brazil's Bruno Soares.
The 2025 Nitto ATP Finals will take place between Sunday 9 November and Sunday 16 November.
