The Lexus Great Britain Billie Jean King Cup team have done it. Their stunning 3-1 win over Australia has booked their place in the Finals for the fourth time in five years.

With wins for Mika StojsavljevicHarriet Dart and Jodie Burrage, the Brits come away from Melbourne having produced one of the best victories in the competition so far.

We take a look at five key takeaways from their all-important victory.

From underdogs to Qualifiers

Coming into this tie, Great Britain had been branded as the underdogs, playing an away tie against a strong Australian side and missing their four top-ranked singles players in Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal and Francesca Jones.

However, it’s not the first time the Brits have been able to find that extra spark of brilliance in the Qualifiers when the chips have been stacked against them.

In 2024, the Lexus GB side produced a stunning result to knock out an equally impressive French team with a shock win on the clay.

Then last year, the Brits once again had to come through on the clay against tough opponents in Germany and Netherlands.

The victories for Stojsavljevic, Dart and Burrage show the quality and depth that exists in British tennis at the moment and how the players are able to raise their game when competing for their country, no matter the challenge in front of them.

Great Britain’s latest Colour Holder makes winning start

Making a debut for your country is nerve-racking enough, but to do it on the biggest stage at the age of 17, with a place in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals on the line, adds an extra layer of pressure.

Former junior US Open champion Stojsavljevic took all that in her stride and produced one of the standout results from all the Qualifiers this weekend in taking down world No.56 Talia Gibson on home soil.

What was so impressive about Stojsavljevic’s performance was how comfortable she looked in the decisive moments.

Despite losing a 4-0 lead in the opening set tie-break, the Briton held her nerve to edge ahead and eventually serve it out. Then, having missed the opportunity to serve out the match at 5-3 in the second set, she saved five break points at 5-5 to go on and claim the rubber for GB in the following game.

It was a debut to remember for LTA Colour Holder No.334 and one that will live long in the memory of British fans.

Dart produces the magic for GB

The last time Great Britain faced off against Australia, Dart was the only player to get a victory with a stunning upset over Ajla Tomljanovic in Glasgow four years ago.

Fast-forward to this year and she came in as the most experienced and top-ranked player in Keothavong’s side – and with that comes more pressure.

In that role, other players are looking to you to lead the way and Dart showed exactly what she was capable of, bringing home the win for Great Britain.

She showed her fight and resilience in a tough battle with Kimberly Birrell, coming back from a set down to put her team 2-0 in front and then produced the goods in a crucial doubles rubber, knowing that a win would seal the tie.

Dart combined with Burrage to produce another upset win, taking down top 20 stars Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez in straight sets.

The 29-year-old now has nine wins from 11 Billie Jean King Cup ties for Great Britain and demonstrated once again that she can raise her level for her country.

Great Britain a dominant force in the Billie Jean King Cup

In 2019, Great Britain secured promotion to the World Group II of the formerly known Fed Cup, ending the team’s 26-year wait to reach that stage of the competition.

In the seven years that have followed, and under the competition’s new format as the Billie Jean King Cup, the Brits have been to the final stage on four occasions now including this year.

In their previous three visits to the Finals, the Brits have reached the semi-finals – in Glasgow 2022 as well as the last two competitions.

Their consistently strong results have led to them being the No.3 ranked team in the Billie Jean King Cup rankings.

This victory against Australia, with a new-look side, away from home, is just another in a series of statement performances that have put the Brits near the top of the pack in Billie Jean King Cup.

Team spirit proves key factor

Whenever you hear the players talking about the Billie Jean King Cup during event weeks, the one thing they always mention is the atmosphere in the group.

One of the biggest factors to GB’s success in recent years has been the culture and energy created by Keothavong, the back room staff and the players throughout the week, and this tie was no different.

You only had to listen to Katie Swan talking before the tie about how much of a good teammate she wanted to be for the rest of the squad, and despite not featuring in any of the matches, the 27-year-old was on the sidelines shouting and cheering every point.

It’s this type of comradery that can give you that extra couple of percent when you need it the most as well as the confidence to go out and execute on the court.
