Wheelchair Performance Programme

National Wheelchair Training

The Wheelchair Tennis Pathway

The Wheelchair Tennis Pathway in Wales has grown from eight Open Court programmes a few years ago to 36 now. There is also a Wheelchair National Training Programme which provides weekly indoor training for our best players. The National Training Programme - which is overseen by former GB Wheelchair Performance Director Geraint Richards - develops the skills of players aged between 15 and 65.

LTA Wheelchair Tennis Initiative Days

Tennis Wales works closely with the LTA to ensure that Welsh players of an appropriate standard have the opportunity to benefit from the support that their national coaching team can offer. We assist the LTA in delivering their Wheelchair Tennis Initiative Days around GB to identify the future stars of the game.

Tennis Wales Wheelchair National Training Programme

Tennis Wales is committed to helping the best Welsh wheelchair players at all ages improve by providing subsidised, weekly indoor training. There are junior recreational groups delivered by several of our LTA Accredited venues which feed our National Training Junior group. From there players can move up to our adult development and adult performance groups. At this level, players have weekly training programmes and play in a schedule of competitions throughout the year.

LTA Wheelchair Performance Pathway

Tennis Wales’ Wheelchair National Training Programme aims to develop players to the standards required to be part of the LTA Wheelchair Performance Pathway and beyond.

Disability Sport Wales

Tennis Wales is proud to work closely with Disability Sport Wales to offer talented athletes the opportunity to try tennis, and to sign-post our tennis players to other sports.  Talent Transfer is common amongst disability sport and we are making good progress in this area. Tennis Wales has already welcomed athletes from other sports to tennis and has showcased tennis to athletes who are part of the Disability Sport Wales Performance Pathway Hub at a National Camp day.

Access the Performance Pathway Hub application form on the Disability Sport Wales website.

Coach education and mentoring

Tennis Wales wants the coaching workforce in Wales to be able to deliver high-quality training for wheelchair players. To this aim we provide partner funding from the LTA to educate and enable coaches in Wales. Geraint Richards mentors some of our most high-potential coaches.
