Sensory tennis
Sensory Tennis was launched in 2022 to enable disabled people with complex needs to access tennis in a meaningful and engaging way. A collaboration between the LTA, national disability charity Sense and LUSU Sports, Sensory Tennis breaks down the sport into key areas of skill development. It uses a person-centred approach to enable activities to be fully adapted to people’s needs and allowing them to fully benefit from all the physical, mental and social benefits derived from taking part in sports activities.
The programme has grown over the last 3 years with sessions being set up at tennis and community venues across the UK enabling hundreds of people to engage in tennis for the first time. A full support package is offered to any coaches or volunteers setting up Sensory Tennis sessions, including an activity toolkit, sample session plans, equipment and funding.
The Sensory Tennis toolkit gives coaches and volunteers all the information and guidance they would need to deliver a Sensory Tennis session. The sessions are broken down into more meaningful chunks of activity and takes tennis so far away from full-court yellow ball tennis – we feel this opens our sport up for more people than ever before.
