Mika Stojsavljevic claims first WTA win in Hong Kong

• 1 minute read

17-year-old British star Mika Stojsavljevic ticked off another career milestone in winning her first WTA Tour singles match at the Hong Kong Open.

Stojsavljevic was a late call-up to play the main draw as a lucky loser, going on to beat former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

In a match that saw 11 breaks of serve, Stojsavljevic fought her way to an early 4-1 lead in the third set.

Kenin – who ranks 224 places above the British star – overturned one break in the decider, but Stojsavljevic held her nerve to serve out the victory on her second match point.

"I only knew an hour before I was going to be playing,” she said after the match. “I kind of just went out and swung today.

"We didn't have much time to prepare. Obviously, I know she's a Grand Slam champion so it was never going to be an easy match but I believed in myself and it worked out.”

She moves on to the second round, where she is due to meet world No.67 Zeynep Sonmez.

The result adds to an already impressive first full season on the tour. The young Brit reached the WTA 125 quarter-finals at the Lexus Birmingham Open, has made three World Tennis Tour semi-finals, and clinched an upset win against Talia Gibson on her Billie Jean King Cup debut against Australia.

Stojsavljevic – who is supported by the LTA Pro Scholarship Programme, presented by Lexus – won the junior US Open girls’ singles title in 2024 and is a former winner of the Lexus Junior National Championships.

Stojsavljevic will be back in action in the second round of the Hong Kong Open on Thursday 5 November.
