Miami Open 2026: Katie Boulter and Cam Norrie beaten, as Francesca Jones retires in second round

• 2 minute read

Great Britain’s hopes of a singles champion in Miami have ended after Katie Boulter, Cam Norrie and Francesca Jones all bowed out of the Miami Open presented by Itau.

Boulter produced a strong performance in her third-round match against 13th seed Karolina Muchova but ultimately fell short, losing 6-3, 7-5 in one hour and 32 minutes.

Norrie battled back from a set down to force a decider against American Alex Michelsen, but was unable to complete the comeback, slipping to a 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4 second-round defeat.

Meanwhile, Jones was forced to retire due to illness during her second-round match against fifth seed Jessica Pegula, trailing 6-1, 3-0.

Despite the disappointment, Jones leaves Miami with plenty to smile about, after beating her tennis idol Venus Williams 7-5, 7-5 in the opening round.

Despite missing out on a spot in the last 16,Boulter can take positives from her run, having reached the third round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time in over a year and will look to carry that momentum heading into the clay court swing.

Muchova – a two-time Roland Garros finalist – made a strong start, breaking the British No. 2 in the second and sixth games before sealing the opening set with an ace.

Boulter picked up her level in the second, particularly on serve where she won 71% (17/24) of points behind her first serve compared to just 40% (4//10) in the opener.

The four-time WTA titleholder matched the world No. 13 stride for stride, but a tight service game at 5-5 proved decisive as Muchova secured the crucial break with a cross-court forehand winner before serving out the match to love.

Norrie narrowly misses out to Michelsen

British No. 1 Norrie arrived in Miami looking to build on his recent run to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells, but was edged out in a closely contested encounter with Michelsen.

There was little separating the two players in the opening set, but the 21-year-old American made his move in the 12th game - eventually converting his sixth break point as Norrie hit a forehand long.

However, Norrie responded well in the second set, recovering from 3-0 down to force a tiebreak. There, the Brit capitalised on some errors from his opponent, and raised his level to take the match to a set apiece.

However, a single break in the third game of the deciding set proved enough for Michelsen, who went on to seal victory in two hours and 44 minutes on his first match point.

While there’s no British interest left in the singles draw, the doubles draw is only just ramping up. Olivia Nicholls is still contesting the women’s doubles draw while Henry Patten, Luke Johnson, Neal Skupski, Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool are set for men’s doubles action.
