Keeping up with the Brits: 15 November, 2021

It’s safe to say, the Brits are having a hell of a month this November.

Last weekend saw even more success for our British tennis players, with five titles, one runner-up, a semi-finalist and two quarter finalists. Here is what happened…

What happened in British tennis last week

Andy Murray and Dan Evans both reached the quarter finals in the Stockholm Open. Murray lost out in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 to American Tommy Paul. The match in Stockholm will be Andy’s last tour match of 2021 as he enjoys some down time before Battle of the Brits in December.

Dan Evans campaign was ended by Frances Tiafoe. Evans took the first set, before the American fought back to take the second and third sets.

Jack Draper was in singles and doubles action in Italy at the ATP Challenger Ortisei. The young Brit, who is also on the LTA PSP programme, reached the semi-finals in both singles and doubles.

Lloyd Glasspool and his doubles partner Harri Heliövaara from Finland won the doubles title at the ATP Roanne Challenger event in France, winning the final in straight sets.

Paul Jubb and Mark Whitehouse were crowned champions in the singles and doubles respectively at the M25 Harlingen in Texas over the weekend. Jubb, who receives support through the LTA Pro Scholarship Programme (PSP), won in three sets against Romanian Gabi Adrian Boitan.

The 22-year-old, who didn’t drop a set in any of his previous four matches leading into the final, won the decisive third set 7-5 to take the title in the United States. This is the third title at this level in as many months for Jubb, having won his first in Portugal back in September of this year.

Whitehouse and teammate Francis Alcantara from Philippines won a three-set thriller to capture the M25 Harlingen doubles title – the first at this level in his career. The third seeds won 7-6(3), 5-7, 10-7 against Gabi Adrian Boitan and German Constantin Frantzen.

The British duo of Ben Jones and Dan Little were in action in Egypt and capped off a fine week by winning the M15 Sharm El Sheikh doubles title. Jones and Little, both 23, collected the title following their 6-4,7-5 victory against Ray Ho and Grigoriy Lomakin.

Ali Gray lost in the final of the ITF M15 in Heraklion losing out irm El Shn three sets to Italian Francesco Maestrelli.

Back on home soil two rising stars, Anton Matusevich and Sonay Kartal, were crowned UK Pro League champions in front of a capacity crowd at The Shrewsbury Club. Matusevich beat Henry Patten 6-2, 6-4 in the men’s final before Kartal got the better of Freya Christie 6-0, 6-1 in the women’s final.
