The countdown is on ahead of the final Grand Slam of the season, with this year’s US Open set to be bigger and better than ever thanks to the introduction of a reimagined mixed doubles event.

The new-look US Open Mixed Doubles Championships is an official Grand Slam tournament which will see the biggest ATP and WTA stars team up to compete against each other.

The mixed doubles has never been played in this format before, so we’re here to tell you everything you need to know about the unmissable event at Flushing Meadows.

When is the US Open Mixed Doubles Championships taking place?

The mixed doubles draw will be played in the first week of the three-week tournament, often known as ‘Fan Week, between the 19-20 August. This has changed from previous years where the mixed doubles draw was played during the singles and doubles main draw competition.

What is the format of the US Open Mixed Doubles Championships?

Unlike previous years, the mixed doubles competition will headline the stadium courts – both on Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong.

The matches will consist of best-of-three set matches with shorter sets consisting of up to four games. There will be no-ad in games that reach a deuce score, meaning that the winner of the next point wins the game.

If both doubles partnerships have won four games in a set, a 10 point tie-break will be played instead of a third set. The first team to win 10 points, with an advantage of two or more points will win the match.

In the final, the format will change to a best-of-three set match with sets up to six games, no-advantage and a 10 point tie-break in lieu of a third set if the teams share the sets.

How many teams will compete in the US Open Mixed Doubles Championships?
