US Open 2025: Cam Norrie defeated by Novak Djokovic in third round

• 2 MINUTE READ

Cam Norrie lost out in the third round of the US Open to 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic despite a spirited performance from the British No.2.

Norrie briefly led by a break in the third set but ultimately lost out to the 38-year-old Serbian 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 49 minutes on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Djokovic has now beaten Norrie in all seven of their previous meetings, including three matches at Grand Slams.

Norrie will leave New York pleased with the way he's battled in the big matches so far this season - having made the third round or better at three of the four Grand Slams.

"I wouldn't change too much, I tried to play my brand of tennis, I tried to make it physical," Norrie said after the match.

"In the third and fourth sets I gave him too many cheap points and that was the difference.

"It has been fun - I wouldn't change anything in this tournament. There is so much to smile about."

Despite taking the initial break at 3-3 before going on to clinch the opening set, Djokovic looked to be struggling with a slight back injury and called for a medical time-out.

Norrie has bought some of his best tennis in the Grand Slams this season, with a quarter-final run at Wimbledon and making the fourth round at Roland Garros. The US Open has been no exception, and the 30-year-old Briton pushed Djokovic all the way.

The British star made the second set a more physical battle for Djokovic, and it paid off. Norrie saved three break points from 0-40 down at 3-3 before going on to level the match in a close tie-break and seemingly had the momentum in his favour.

Djokovic’s serve had been near enough unstoppable throughout the match – racking up 18 aces and winning 83% of points off his first serve (55/66) – but Norrie sensed his chance early in the third set.

The Briton let out a roar as he broke Djokovic on his opening service game in the third, only for the 24-time major champion to fire straight back and level at 1-1.

It would be the only opportunity Djokovic allowed him all match, as the Serbian went on to break twice more to see out the third set.

An early 3-0 advantage in the fourth was all it took for the world No.7 to serve his way into the fourth round – becoming the oldest player to do so since Jimmy Conners in 1991.

Norrie was the last British payer remaining in the singles draws at the US Open after Emma Raducanu lost out to ninth seed Elena Rybakina earlier in the day.
