Roland Garros 2025: Historic wins in Paris as Hewett makes it to an eighth semi-final

• 2 MINUTE READ

Alfie Hewett reached his eighth French Open men’s singles semi-final in nine appearances at Roland Garros before pairing up with Gordon Reid to book their place in their sixth successive French Open men’s doubles final

On the third day of wheelchair tennis in Paris, the British No.1 faced doubles partner Gordon Reid for the third year in a row in the men’s singles quarter-finals in Paris, eventually winning in straight sets.

The three-time Roland Garros champion will now face Argentinian fourth seed Gustavo Fernandez in tomorrow’s semi-final not before midday UK time.

Starting their ninth meeting in a Grand Slam with a love service game, Hewett’s break in the sixth game proved key as he won the last four games of the set. His dominance was underpinned by winning eight of the ten points behind both his first and second serves.

Reid dug deep to match Hewett after eight games in the second set - the 2016 and 2019 finalist fought back from 4-2 down to keep the match alive. However, Hewett’s third ace of the set helped him to regain the lead and go on to seal victory after 90 minutes.

Brits make doubles history on the clay

Top seeds and defending champions Hewett and Reid were unstoppable as they won in straight sets to make it through to another final on the Parisian clay.

Hewett and Reid will find out their opponents tomorrow after the semi-final between Stephane Houdet and Tokito Oda and Daniel Caverzaschi and Gustavo Fernandez was suspended in the second set due to the deteriorating weather.

The Brits made the same fast start that they’d made to their quarter-final, taking the opening set against Japan’s Takuya Miki and Casey Ratzlaff of the USA 6-2 in just 35 minutes after converting four of their eight break point opportunities.

Having dropped the second set in their quarter-final against Alexander Cataldo and Sergei Lysov, the 22-time Grand Slam champions showed no signs of their level slipping this time and raced to a 4-0 lead. Amid increasingly wet and colder conditions, Reid gave the watching fans plenty to smile about as he fired down an ace on their third match point to close out a 6-2, 6-3 victory after an hour and 14 minutes.

They will contest the doubles final on Saturday 7 June not before 15:30 UK time.

Elsewhere, it was a disappointing day for Andy Lapthorne after his quad singles and doubles campaigns both came to an end, as he lost to the Dutch top seed Niels Vink and Ahmet Kaplan and Donald Ramphadi respectively.
