Dan Evans and Marin Cilic headline first ever men’s grass court event in Birmingham

• 2 MINUTE READ

The entry list for the men’s draw at this summer’s Lexus Birmingham Open has been confirmed, with British tennis icon Dan Evans and former US Open champion Marin Cilic set to take to the grass courts of the Edgbaston Priory Club.

Evans is a former British No.1 and has two ATP Tour titles to his name. A stalwart of the Lexus GB Davis Cup team, he has played in 42 singles and doubles matches for his country, as well as a memorable run to the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics tennis with Andy Murray in what was to be Murray’s final event.  Evans has already spoken of his excitement taking to the grass courts in his home town for the first time.

Other notable names in the confirmed list include 2014 US Open champion Cilic, who reached a career-high of No.3 in the world in 2018 and has a history on British grass, claiming the title in 2018 at the Queen’s Club in London.

Meanwhile, Britain's Billy Harris, who reached three semi-finals on British grass last summer in Surbiton, Nottingham and Eastbourne, as well as a run to the quarter finals at Queen’s, will also feature in the first grass court event of the summer.

France’s Quentin Halys is the highest ranked player to enter this year’s Lexus Birmingham Open, currently sitting at a career-high of 52 in the world after a standout year so far that has seen him reach his first ATP 500 semi-final in Dubai.

The Lexus Birmingham Open is for the first time opening the British summer of grass court tennis, as part of a revamped summer calendar announced by the LTA last year.

Over the years, many greats of the game, from Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova to Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams, have graced the courts at the Edgbaston Priory Club.

This year, a brand-new men’s event at ATP Challenger 125 level, the first outdoor professional tennis men’s event to take place in Birmingham, is sitting alongside a WTA 125 tournament, whose line-up confirmed last week will include Britain’s Sonay Kartal.

Kirsty Thomson, Tournament Director of the Lexus Birmingham Open, said, “We’re delighted to confirm a really strong line-up for the men’s draw at this year’s Lexus Birmingham Open, adding to last week’s announcement of the WTA draw.

"Welcoming players of Dan Evans’ and Marin Cilic’s calibre to the opening event of the British grass court summer - and the first men’s grass court event to be held in the city – means fans can look forward to some brilliant action on the courts at the Edgbaston Priory Club.”
