British star Sonay Kartal leads stellar women’s lineup for Lexus Birmingham Open

• 2 MINUTE READ

Great Britain’s rising star Sonay Kartal is among a number of players set to contest the first grass court event of 2025, with the entry list for the women’s draw of the Lexus Birmingham Open now confirmed.

Kartal has delivered a number of strong performances in 2025, including a run to the last 16 of Indian Wells and winning on her debut for the Lexus GB Billie Jean King Cup team in the Netherlands last month, and has seen her ranking rise into the world’s top 60 for the first time.

She will be making her debut on the grass in Birmingham, however, it won't be her first time playing at the Edgbaston Prirory Club, having won an ITF Tour title at the club in 2022, one of nine ITF titles (of 14 in total) won on British soil.

Alongside Kartal, British No.4 Harriet Dart and the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala, who recently took down Iga Swiatek in a memorable run to the semi-finals at the WTA 1000 Miami Open, will feature in the main draw.

The Lexus Birmingham Open is for the first time opening the British summer of grass court tennis, as part of a revamped summer calendar announced by the LTA last year. Over the years, many greats of the game, from Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova to Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams, have graced the courts at the Edgbaston Priory Club.

This year, alongside the WTA 125 there will be a brand-new men’s event at ATP Challenger 125 level, with Brit and Birmingham local Dan Evans set to compete in his home city for the first time. This is the first outdoor professional tennis men’s event to take place in Birmingham, with the entry list for the men’s event to be confirmed later in May.

Kirsty Thomson, Tournament Director of the Lexus Birmingham Open, said, “We are looking forward to welcoming a really strong playing field for the first grass court event of the summer. The courts here at Edgbaston have a history of attracting some of the world’s best players, and with Sonay, Harriet, Dan and many others set to compete, this year is no different. Alongside the men for the first time, the Lexus Birmingham Open is set to be an exciting curtain-raiser for the British grass court summer.”
